There Was A Caveman is an action platformer set in a prehistoric world overrun by dinosaurs. The last living caveman leaves his cave in search of a female of his kind, hoping to rebuild their civilization. The journey is made dangerous by hostile creatures and deadly hazards.

The player travels through caves, forests and other areas, including the inside of a giant dinosaur. Movement involves dashing, variable-height jumps and friction control; the hero can also swim and use throwable weapons. Enemies include pterodactyls, diplodocus and overgrown squid, alongside challenging boss fights. Hidden objects and secret locations can be found along the way.
