Fable will skip tiny stat boosts for bigger upgrade changes
Fable is being built around a progression system that avoids tiny bonuses like "+1% damage," with Playground Games saying upgrades will instead make a much more noticeable difference. The game is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027, for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
In an interview with материал, creative director Will Kennedy said the studio wants upgrades to feel substantially different rather than barely moving the numbers.
We want our upgrades to be what we call meaningfully meaningful. So you don't get things like, "Oh, 1% damage," and things like that. What you get is bigger swings.
Kennedy also pointed to one weapon spell upgrade as an example of how the system will work. At first, the spell can suspend an enemy in the air, but one of its upgrades adds a slam attack. Playground Games says spells and abilities will have their own skill tree, while weapons will follow a separate upgrade path.
The studio also tied progression to Fable's social systems. Chests can contain gifts and baubles that improve the player's social standing, and some of those items can later be given to NPCs around the world. Playground Games also showed off part of the arsenal, including sword and shield, a two-handed greathammer, a bow, and a crossbow.
By the way, the length of the new Fable was revealed earlier.
Do you prefer this kind of bigger progression shift over small percentage-based upgrades?
