How to Solve the Murders at the Open Hand Monastery in Baldur's Gate 3

Throughout Baldur's Gate 3, you'll not only engage in combat with enemies but also solve puzzles and participate in investigations. For instance, in Act 3, you'll need to identify the murderer who ended a man's life in the Open Hand Monastery. If you're having trouble, use our guide.

Follow the main storyline to reach Act 3. Your destination is the village of Rivington. From the rune stone, head north along the road. The monastery is located to the left of the Southern Outpost, at the crossroads. Its location is marked on the map.

Enter the building, go straight ahead, and talk to Sister Yannisa. She will ask you to investigate the murders of Father Lorgan.

There are several ways to identify the murderer. Here are some optional actions you can perform to gather more information about the crime:

Or you can go straight to the kitchen. It's located to the right of where you met Sister Yannisa.

Open the hatch in the floor and go down. This will lead you to the crypt.

Turn right, open the doors, and move forward. Interact with the two plates with crests on them. They will rise, revealing buttons hidden behind them. Press these buttons to open a secret passage in the wall.

Proceed until you encounter three murderers. In their conversation, they will mention Freygo's hostel. This is crucial information. Defeat the criminals and search their bodies. You'll need to find a key for later use.

Pay attention to the hole leading to a blood trail. There lies the Paralyzing Dagger, used to commit the murders.

Then, move to the location beyond the Monastery gates. If it's locked, you might need to progress further in the main story. There, you need to find Freygo's hostel.

But first, visit Investigator Valeria in the «Caress of Sharess» brothel. Talk to her and mention that you're conducting an investigation.

Next, head to Freygo's hostel, turn right, and go up to the second floor.

Use the ladder near the beds to climb even higher.

To the right, there's a cabinet. Open it using the key you found earlier.

You'll find yourself in a secret room.

Pay attention to the hole led to by the trail of blood. There lies the Paralyzer dagger, capable of paralyzing the victim. It was used to commit the murders.

Then, move to the location behind the Temple gates. If it's closed, you need to progress a bit in the main storyline. There, you need to find Freygo's hostel.

But first, visit Investigator Valeria in the Caress of Sharess brothel. Talk to her and tell her that you are conducting an investigation.

Then head to Freygo's hostel, turn right and go up to the second floor.

Use the ladder next to the beds to climb even higher.

You will find yourself in a secret room. It's important to find the Bloodied Scroll and the List of Victims here.

Return to Investigator Valeria and show the woman the evidence you've gathered.

With this, the first investigation will be completed. Besides the standard reward, you will receive a special pass, allowing you to pass through the checkpoints.
