How to Play Gale as a Wizard

Best Gale Wizard Build in Baldur’s Gate 3

The main strength of Gale as a Wizard is his spellbook. Wizards can learn many different spells, prepare them before combat, and adapt to almost any encounter. This also makes the class harder for beginners: you need to understand which spells deal damage, which ones control enemies, and which ones protect Gale from being killed too quickly.

For this build, Gale should not ignore Constitution completely. A Wizard still needs enough hit points to survive stray attacks and enough Constitution to maintain Concentration on important spells. That is why this build uses 14 Constitution instead of dumping it.

Use these starting ability scores for Gale:

  • Strength: 8
  • Dexterity: 16
  • Constitution: 14
  • Intelligence: 16
  • Wisdom: 10
  • Charisma: 10

The recommended ability scores for level 1 are shown in the screenshot above. You can choose skill proficiencies according to your play style; they do not change the core of this Gale build.

Why Gale Needs Dexterity and Mage Armor

Gale is not a front-line fighter, but he still needs enough survivability to avoid being killed by the first enemy that reaches him. This is why Dexterity is so important for a Wizard build: it increases Armor Class, improves Initiative, and helps Gale act earlier in combat.

With 16 Dexterity, Gale gets a +3 Dexterity modifier. Without armor, this gives him 13 AC. After casting Mage Armor, his Armor Class increases to 16, which is a much safer number for the early game.

Constitution should not be ignored either. This build uses 14 Constitution because Gale needs extra hit points and better Concentration checks for important spells.

Note: Cast Mage Armor after every Long Rest. It lasts until the next Long Rest and should always be active before combat.

Best Gale Wizard Build — Level-by-Level Progression

Best Gale Wizard Build in Baldur’s Gate 3

At level 1, Gale already needs a good mix of damage, utility, and defensive spells. For cantrips, choose:

  • Fire Bolt
  • Mage Hand
  • Minor Illusion

Fire Bolt is your main damage cantrip in the early game. Mage Hand and Minor Illusion are more situational, but they are useful for exploration, positioning, and distracting enemies.

Choose the following level 1 spells:

  • Burning Hands
  • Thunderwave
  • Mage Armor
  • Feather Fall
  • Sleep
  • Magic Missile

The most important spell here is Mage Armor. Cast it after every Long Rest before entering combat. Magic Missile gives Gale guaranteed damage, Sleep can disable dangerous early enemies, and Thunderwave is excellent for pushing enemies off ledges.

Note: Wizards can learn additional spells from scrolls, so Gale does not have to get every important spell only through leveling.

Best Subclass for Gale at Level 2

Best Gale Wizard Build in Baldur’s Gate 3

At level 2, choose Divination School for Gale. This subclass is built around Portent Dice, one of the strongest defensive and control tools available to a Wizard. It lets Gale replace certain attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks with pre-rolled values.

This makes Divination especially strong on Tactician difficulty, where one failed saving throw or one enemy critical hit can completely change the outcome of a fight.

How Portent Works

Portent gives Gale special dice after a Long Rest. During combat, these dice can be used to replace a roll with one of the stored results. This is extremely useful when you need to prevent a dangerous enemy hit, force an important enemy saving throw to fail, or protect a party member from a critical moment.

For example, if a boss is about to land a powerful attack, Gale can use a low Portent Die to turn that roll into a miss. If Gale casts a control spell and the enemy is about to resist it, a low Portent Die can help make the spell work.

What Spells to Choose at Level 2

Choose Chromatic Orb and False Life. Chromatic Orb gives Gale flexible elemental damage, while False Life adds temporary hit points and helps him survive the early game.

What Spells to Choose at Level 3

Here we recommend Misty Step and Shatter. Misty Step is one of the best mobility spells in Baldur’s Gate 3, allowing Gale to escape melee range, reach high ground, or reposition instantly. Shatter gives him strong area damage against grouped enemies.

Note: do not forget that prepared spells can be changed through the Spellbook outside combat.

What Cantrips and Spells to Choose at Level 4

Best Gale Wizard Build in Baldur’s Gate 3

At level 4, choose Bone Chill as an additional cantrip. It is not your main source of damage, but it gives Gale another ranged option and prevents the target from healing until your next turn.

Recommended spells:

  • Gust of Wind
  • Invisibility

Gust of Wind can push enemies away, knock them from dangerous positions, and create space for Gale. Invisibility is useful both in combat and exploration, especially when you need to reposition, avoid danger, or set up an encounter before it starts.

Best Feat for Gale at Level 4

Best Gale Wizard Build in Baldur’s Gate 3

At level 4, choose the Tough feat. Gale is still a fragile spellcaster, and this feat gives him extra hit points for every level. It makes the build much more forgiving, especially for players who are not used to keeping Wizards away from danger.

If you want more damage and stronger spell saving throws earlier, you can choose Ability Score Improvement instead and increase Intelligence. However, for this version of the build, Tough is the safer option.

What Spells to Choose at Levels 5 and 6

At levels 5 and 6, Gale unlocks level 3 spells. This is one of the biggest power spikes for any Wizard build, because Gale finally gets access to strong area damage and key defensive reactions.

Choose these spells:

  • Fireball
  • Counterspell
  • Blink
  • Fear

Fireball is Gale’s main area damage spell at this stage. Counterspell is mandatory against enemy spellcasters. Blink improves survivability, while Fear gives Gale a strong crowd control option.

Note that having these spells in the Spellbook is not enough — do not forget to prepare the spells.

What Spells to Choose at Level 7

Ice Storm and Dimension Door are both excellent utility spells. Ice Storm deals area damage and creates an icy surface that can make enemies slip. Dimension Door lets Gale teleport himself and one ally, which is perfect for escaping danger, reaching high ground, or saving a party member.

What Spells and Feat to Choose at Level 8

Now choose Wall of Fire and Stoneskin. Wall of Fire is one of the best control and damage spells for narrow passages, doorways, and grouped enemies. Stoneskin improves survivability when Gale or another party member is likely to take weapon damage.

Best Gale Wizard Build in Baldur’s Gate 3

For the level 8 feat, choose Ability Score Improvement and increase Intelligence to 18. Intelligence is Gale’s main stat: it affects spell attack rolls and the difficulty of saving throws against his spells. Try to increase ability scores to even numbers, because modifiers improve at 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20.

What Spells to Choose at Level 9

We recommend giving preference to the following spells:

  • Wall of Stone
  • Cloudkill

What Spells and Cantrip to Choose at Level 10

Best Gale Wizard Build in Baldur’s Gate 3

At level 10, Gale can choose one more cantrip. It will not change the build dramatically, but Light is a useful option if your party still needs a simple way to illuminate dark areas.

The best choice here is two strong control spells:

  • Hold Monster
  • Dominate Person

What Spells to Choose at Level 11

At level 11, Gale gains access to some of the strongest spells in the game:

  • Globe of Invulnerability
  • Chain Lightning

Globe of Invulnerability can protect the entire party during dangerous turns, especially in boss fights. Chain Lightning gives Gale devastating burst damage against several enemies at once.

What Spells to Choose at Level 12

At level 12, choose Wall of Ice and Sunbeam. Wall of Ice gives Gale another strong area-control option and can block enemy movement, while Sunbeam is a powerful late-game damage spell that can hit multiple enemies in a line.

Remember that level 6 spell slots are limited, so do not waste these spells on minor encounters. Save them for bosses, large enemy groups, or fights where Gale needs to turn the battle in one action.

Best Gale Wizard Build in Baldur’s Gate 3

At level 12, Gale can prepare 16 spells at once. The prepared spell list shown in the screenshot is only one example of a balanced setup. Before difficult fights, adjust the Spellbook depending on what you need most: area damage, mobility, defensive magic, or crowd control.

Best Gale Wizard Build in Baldur’s Gate 3

The final feat also becomes available at level 12. For this build, choose Ability Score Improvement again and increase Gale’s Intelligence to 20.

This gives the final ability score spread:

  • Strength: 8
  • Dexterity: 16
  • Constitution: 14
  • Intelligence: 20
  • Wisdom: 10
  • Charisma: 10

Intelligence is Gale’s most important stat because it improves spell attack rolls and makes it harder for enemies to resist his spells. If your Intelligence is already 20 because of gear or other bonuses, you can invest the points into Constitution for survivability or Dexterity for better Armor Class and Initiative.

Best Wizard Spells for Gale in BG3

Here is a list of powerful spells that Gale can learn from scrolls and should add to his Spellbook:

  • Circle of Death
  • Dethrone
  • Curriculum of Strategy: Artistry of War
  • Disintegrate

All of them are extremely powerful late-game spells, so do not skip them if you want to make Gale as strong as possible. These scrolls can be found in Act 3 while exploring Ramazith's Tower and Sorcerous Sundries in the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate.
