How to Unlock Fishing in Monster Hunter Wilds

To unlock the ability to fish, during the storyline quest of Chapter 1-2 "Village Of Whispering Winds," you need to talk to Jack, who is in charge of provisions at the Base Camp. Previously, you will help him gather honey. As a token of gratitude, the guy will give you several items, including a fishing rod.

However, you will be able to fully engage in fishing only in Chapter 1-3 "To The Forest." There, you will gain access to the game's open world. Head to the nearest body of water, find the designated spot, cast your rod, and wait for the fish to start biting.

In the Base Camp of the Crimson Forest, you can meet Kanya. She sits on the shore of a pond. The girl gives side quests that are directly related to fishing.

How to Fish in Monster Hunter Wilds

The algorithm is simple:

Find a fishing spot. It is marked with a characteristic icon.
Approach it and equip the fishing rod using the radial menu or item bar.
Select bait (LB + Y/A on the gamepad or CTRL + Up/Down on the keyboard). We will tell you more about them below.
Decide on the direction where you will cast the line (hold LT on the gamepad or the right mouse button (RMB) on the keyboard).
Cast the rod (RT on the gamepad or left mouse button (LMB) on the keyboard).
Move the joystick or press the W, A, S, and D keys. This is an optional step, but it will help attract fish faster. Try to move the bait smoothly, without sudden movements.
When the rod jerks, press RT or LMB to pull it towards you.

What Baits Are Available in Monster Hunter Wilds

To catch valuable fish, you need to choose the right bait.

Common Wood Minnow. Suitable for all types of fish but not very effective. You will receive it along with the fishing rod.
Golden Bughead. Useful when catching golden and platinum fish. You will receive these insects at the beginning of the "Seeking The Goldenfish" quest.
Emerald Jitterbait. Suitable for sushi fish, arowana, hatchetfish, and bowfin. You will receive this item during the "Seeking The Goldenfish" quest.
Tuff Joint Bait. Helps catch spartuna, large jack, and gourmet tuna. It is given at the beginning of the "The Catch Of A Lifetime!" mission.
Duster Rig. Useful when catching petrikant and gadjau. You will receive this bait during "The Catch Of A Lifetime!" quest.
Tentacle Jig. Helps catch eskunita and giant squid. You will receive this item at the beginning of the Razzle Dazzle assignment.

What Is Fish Used For in Monster Hunter Wilds

If you regularly engage in fishing, you will be able to obtain various valuable resources, including fins, scales, and other materials. Your inventory will also include ingredients for cooking nutritious dishes, including those that increase your hero's defense. Additionally, you will be able to fill out the field guide.

Players who strive to earn all achievements will not be able to do without fishing. Several achievements are directly related to it:

"Angling for a Bite." You need to catch any fish.
"Monster (Squid) Hunter." You need to pull a giant squid out of the water.
"A-fish-ionado." Catch 30 goliath fish.
