The defining feature of the new shooter WARDOGS is that every piece of gear, including weapons, ammunition, equipment, and vehicles, has to be purchased separately with in-game currency that carries over between matches. Players who enjoy driving tanks, flying helicopters, and using other combat vehicles will have plenty to experiment with. In this guide, we'll break down helicopter controls in detail, go over the best settings for comfortable flying, and share several useful tips for beginner pilots.
How to Get Access to Helicopters
Helicopters, like other vehicles, are purchased from vendors at the start of a match. To buy one, open the AIR tab in the vendor menu. There are six helicopters available. The MH-6 is unlocked from the beginning, while the other models become available as you level up Pilot:
- MH-6 is a light six-seat transport helicopter with no weapons.
- AH-6M [Miniguns] is an attack version of the Little Bird equipped with two miniguns.
- AH-6R [Rockets] is an attack version of the Little Bird equipped with rocket pods.
- Z20 Lakota is a large transport helicopter designed to carry teammates and cargo.
- Z20 Lakota [Miniguns] is an armed version of the Lakota fitted with miniguns.
- Havoc is a two-seat heavy attack helicopter equipped with an autocannon and rockets.
How to Fly a Helicopter
Flying a helicopter in WARDOGS can feel fairly challenging because rotary-wing aircraft are quite unstable in the air. One wrong input or sudden mouse movement can end in a crash and the loss of your hard-earned cash.
Before taking the pilot's seat, it is worth learning the basic controls. Helicopter flight revolves around four main inputs:
- Collective controls climbing and descending.
- Pitch tilts the helicopter's nose forward or backward.
- Roll banks the helicopter left or right.
- Yaw rotates the aircraft's nose left or right around its vertical axis.
A good pilot needs to manage all four control axes at the same time to avoid crashing the helicopter with the rest of the squad inside. The easiest way to reduce that risk is to set up the controls properly before you fly.
Helicopter Settings for Keyboard and Mouse
Players with dozens of hours in shooters such as Battlefield may want to configure WARDOGS helicopter controls in a similar way:
- Bind Pitch and Roll to the mouse.
- Bind Collective and Yaw to the keyboard.
You can do this in the control settings by enabling Rotary Vehicle Mouse Control.
If you are not fully confident in your flying skills yet, enable Flight Assists in the settings. It is also worth leaving Stability Assist and Auto-Hover Assist enabled at first. They help stabilize the helicopter and keep it in the air. This makes the aircraft easier to control and lets you transport teammates to the battlefield with much more confidence.
Helicopter Settings for a Controller
Full controller support in WARDOGS is still limited. According to player reports, helicopters can be flown with a gamepad, but the current version does not yet offer dedicated configuration and rebinding for aircraft controls. Future updates may give players more freedom to customize helicopter controls for a controller.
Tips for Beginner Pilots
The main piece of advice for helicopter flying has already been mentioned: practice in the Firing Range before taking the aircraft into combat. We collected more WARDOGS secrets, tricks, and useful mechanics in a separate guide. Practice will help you learn what each control does and master several basic maneuvers that will be useful in actual matches. You can find more tips below.
Don't Be Afraid to Work as an Air Taxi
During your first few hours of helicopter gameplay, your main job will simply be transporting teammates to the battlefield. Since the basic helicopter has no weapons, you will often spend a match making repeated trips between the base and the front line.
Successful insertions give you Pilot XP and money, which will help you unlock more advanced aircraft. We explained how to level Pilot quickly in WARDOGS in a separate guide.
Stay Away From Trees
Trees are every helicopter pilot's worst enemy, so try to fly above them whenever possible. Open fields are the safest places to land because there is much less chance of the rotor clipping something and destroying an expensive aircraft.
Remember to Return to Headquarters
In the middle of an intense battle, it is easy to miss the moment when your helicopter needs repairs or runs low on supplies. These indicators still matter, so make a habit of returning to base from time to time to repair the aircraft and restock consumables.
Use Pitch, Roll, and Yaw to Your Advantage
We recommend spending some time learning how the helicopter's main control axes work in practice. Once you understand them properly, you can perform more advanced maneuvers that help you deploy teammates faster or escape incoming fire.
Switch Between First-Person and Third-Person Views
Both camera modes can be useful for getting as much information from the battlefield as possible. Switching between first-person and third-person views makes it easier to track what is happening around you and decide where to move next.

Learning to fly helicopters in WARDOGS is a valuable skill that can make you an important part of your team. A skilled pilot may be exactly what your squad needs to turn the course of a battle in its favor.
