Google Gemini Live Could Get an Offline Mode Powered by Gemini Nano
The team at Android Authority has discovered code strings inside Google’s Android app that point to an upcoming offline mode for Gemini Live.
The references popped up in version 17.71.17, though their presence doesn't guarantee the feature will ever see a public release. One string specifically names the setting "Offline mode," while another states that users can interact with Gemini Live even when not connected to the internet. However, the code fragments alone don't reveal exactly how the feature will work. String IDs suggest the toggle might live in the Gemini account switcher menu, but that's just speculation based on the app's current internal structure. It remains a mystery whether features like camera support and screen sharing will function locally, and details regarding supported devices and language packs are completely up in the air.
Android Authority suspects that without an internet connection, Gemini Live will rely on the on-device Gemini Nano model to handle basic queries. The publication notes that running the assistant locally could result in slower response times and lower accuracy compared to its cloud-powered counterpart.
Google has not commented on a potential launch date, hardware requirements, or language support for the feature.
