Google Rolls Out Android 16: Enhanced Notifications, Security Boost & Tablet Tweaks
Google has officially launched Android 16, the newest version of its mobile operating system. It's available now for Pixel smartphones and will roll out to devices from other manufacturers over the coming months.
Android 16 focuses on practical upgrades centered on convenience, security, and accessibility. One standout feature is Live Notifications. These display real-time updates — like food delivery progress or ride status — directly on your lock screen and notification shade. This system was developed in partnership with popular apps and is already integrated into some custom interfaces, including Samsung's Now Bar and OPPO/OnePlus's Live Alerts.
To combat notification overload, Android now automatically groups alerts from the same app, resulting in a cleaner, more organized interface. On the security front, Android 16 introduces Advanced Protection Mode. This optional feature ramps up defenses against malware, phishing attempts, and unauthorized connections, specifically catering to users who need heightened digital security.
Tablet and foldable users aren't left out either. The update brings a revamped approach to multitasking: you can now open and freely move app windows around the screen, similar to a desktop experience. Later this year, expect support for custom keyboard shortcuts and improved navigation within the taskbar when juggling multiple open apps.
Beyond these, Android 16 packs several other enhancements:
- HDR screenshot support (High Dynamic Range);
- Adaptive refresh rate technology;
- Improvements to identity verification;
- Elements of the new Material 3 Expressive design language (also coming later to Wear OS 6).
The update is available now for Pixel 6 owners and newer models. Users with smartphones from other brands can anticipate Android 16 arriving on their devices in the coming months.
