YouTube Restricts Live Streaming for Users Under 16

YouTube is rolling out new age restrictions for live streaming. Under the updated rules taking effect on July 22nd, only users aged 16 and over will be able to start live streams independently.

Teens aged 13 to 15 will retain the ability to go live, but with a crucial stipulation: an adult must be visibly present throughout the stream. This adult must actively participate in the broadcast, not just be nearby, and must be clearly visible on camera. Technically, the supervising adult will need to hold the role of channel editor, manager, or owner.

For streams by 13-15-year-olds lacking clear adult participation: YouTube may disable the live chat or temporarily restrict access to chat and other account features. General violations of streaming policies (including age-related ones) could lead to temporary account suspension, channel restrictions, or even permanent channel termination for repeat offenses. Creating a new account won't bypass these restrictions – the rules apply across all access points (Android, iOS, PC). Children under 13 are completely barred from live streaming on the platform.

YouTube hasn't yet provided official detailed comments on the reasons behind the change. However, this update comes amid growing scrutiny from regulators and the public regarding minor safety online. The new rules are reportedly aimed at reducing potential risks for younger users during live broadcasts.
