Beyond SMS Codes: Telegram Messenger Introduces Passkey Login

Telegram users now have a new, more secure way to access their accounts. Instead of waiting for an SMS code, they can use Passkeys, which not only simplifies the authorization process but also directly enhances the security of private chats.

This technology ties access to the messenger directly to a device—a smartphone or tablet. To log into an account, it's enough to confirm your identity using Face ID, a fingerprint, or even the device's screen unlock PIN. The cryptographic keys themselves are securely stored in the operating system's protected vault, and if desired, can also be used with third-party password managers.

To activate the new feature, you need to enable the new "Passkeys" option in Settings → Privacy. The system will then create a unique digital link between your device and your Telegram account. Subsequently, when you need to log into the messenger (for example, after reinstalling it), instead of a field for an SMS code, you'll be prompted for biometric confirmation or your device's unlock code.

The main advantages of this approach are independence from your mobile carrier—as problems with SMS or call delivery will no longer block access to your account—and convenience, as the login process becomes faster. Previously, Telegram, like other platforms, had already added a backup login option via email. Passkeys are the next step, moving authorization into the digital realm and directly onto the user's device.

The new option is already available in stable versions of Telegram from official app stores. Analysts note this aligns with the industry's general trend of moving away from passwords and one-time SMS codes in favor of more modern and secure authentication standards.
