Leading Vendors Divided on GPU Power Connection Methods

The question of how to safely connect a powerful modern graphics card with a 12V-2×6 connector remains open. As the survey revealed, even the largest component manufacturers offer users conflicting advice. The YouTube channel Tech Overwrite decided to find out which connection method is considered optimal in practice. To do this, they directly asked 11 leading graphics card and power supply manufacturers a straightforward question: what is safer to use — the native 12V-2×6 cable from the PSU's kit or the adapter supplied in the box with the graphics accelerator.

Out of the 11 vendors surveyed, 9 responded, but their opinions were split. ASUS, MSI, and GIGABYTE unequivocally recommend using the adapter that comes with the graphics card. Meanwhile, SilverStone and ZOTAC advise using the standard cable from the power supply. SAPPHIRE, Thermaltake, Gainward, and Palit took a neutral stance, stating that both options are correct.

In the end, there is no definitive solution for the average user. On one hand, the native PSU cable minimizes potential points of failure by leaving the fewest connections between the PSU and the graphics card. On the other hand, the adapter also has its advantages. The 8-pin PCIe connector it plugs into is a technology proven over decades with a significant safety margin. Additionally, the adapter is often more flexible, which simplifies neat cable routing in a tight case.

However, the key problem is the increasing power consumption of modern GPUs. While cards like the GTX 1080 consumed around 180W, new flagship models can demand up to 600W. The 8-pin connector standard doesn't guarantee stable delivery of such high power, which led to the creation of the new 12V-2×6 standard. However, its rollout has been accompanied by incidents of connector melting, sparking a wave of concern among users.

Regardless of the chosen connection method, it is critical to ensure a complete and secure connection of the connector to the graphics card's port. An improperly inserted cable is one of the most common causes of overheating. The choice between a native PSU cable and a graphics adapter often depends on specific circumstances. Owners of modern ATX 3.0/3.1 standard power supplies would do well to use the native cable to reduce the number of connections. Those keeping a powerful but older power supply should probably stick with the branded adapter from the graphics card manufacturer.
