OpenAI summed up DevDay 2026, which took place on September 29 in San Francisco. The main themes of the conference were new AI agents, work tools for ChatGPT, and the development of Codex. At the same time, the company noticeably reworked its pricing: a $500-a-month Pro tier has appeared, while the reinstated $200 Pro will get half the usage limits.
One of the biggest announcements was Dots — always-on AI agents capable of completing tasks on their own and interacting with apps. They run on GPT-6 Astra, support Slack and Teams, and let you set restrictions on their actions.
OpenAI also introduced ChatGPT Space — a shared workspace for people and AI. It includes Pages documents, collaborative work on materials and presentations, and integrations with Slack and Microsoft Teams. Separately, the company announced Sign in with ChatGPT: in supported third-party apps, users will be able to sign in through their OpenAI account and use the features of their subscription. Codex wasn’t forgotten either: the service got persistent cloud environments that you can connect to from a computer, phone, or another device. OpenAI also showed an unusual demo: Codex built a small 3D game right on stage, demonstrating the agent’s capabilities not only in coding but also in creating finished projects (in the video, this moment starts at 37:03).
Technical issues cropped up during the live demos, and the anticipated GPT-6.1 Astra never appeared, because it was deemed too dangerous. Instead, OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, which the company calls close to Astra in capabilities but significantly cheaper. According to media reports, Astra’s release was canceled after internal safety issues with the model.
Amid all the announcements, OpenAI also revealed the scale of its audience: ChatGPT reached 1.2 billion weekly users, while the number of Codex and ChatGPT Work users exceeded 35 million. So DevDay 2026 ended up being less about one new model and more about turning ChatGPT into a platform with always-on agents, workspaces, and tools for getting tasks done on their own.
