Rumors about the existence of Half-Life 3 appear with unusual regularity. Moreover, if we believe the latest leaks, one of the most anticipated games of all time has reached its final development stage and will be released very soon. This insider news is a great reason to discuss what we expect from Half-Life 3.
The Return of Silent Mr. Freeman
If the third part ever sees the light of day, chances are high that the main character will once again be Gordon Freeman. However, not all fans are 100% sure about this, especially after we received a whole game without Gordon. But the ending of Half-Life: Alyx strongly hints that the next adventure will be his.
The main thing is that Valve should not follow modern trends and try to give Gordon a voice. There is always a risk — the Dead Space remake is a prime example. Even Doomguy has spoken. But in Freeman’s case, it’s crucial that he remains silent: firstly, it creates amusing situations when interacting with NPCs, and secondly, it allows players to experience the story more personally.
Should Gordon Freeman stay silent all the time?
A Memorable City
City 17 is one of the most recognizable virtual cities in gaming history. However, as fans know, it no longer exists in the Half-Life universe, so we’d love to see another similarly striking metropolis.
For the new location to have the same wow effect, it should ideally fit into the signature style of Viktor Antonov. The talented artist, unfortunately, passed away recently. His level of involvement in the project is unknown. However, even if Antonov did not work on the current version of Half-Life 3, he already set the franchise’s art design back in the second game’s era.
Viktor Antonov’s unique artistic style can be described as "retrofuturism with an industrial and totalitarian aesthetic." He often relied on worn, functional, and utilitarian forms, as well as Eastern European brutalism and Soviet constructivism.
Another Unique Gadget
Valve has repeatedly invented unique virtual devices that allow players to interact with the game world in unusual ways. In Half-Life 2, we got the Gravity Gun, which let us manipulate various objects, and the entire gameplay of Portal revolved around the use of the Portal Gun. Something similar would be great to see in HL3.
According to recent leaks, the game will feature an unprecedented level of interaction with the environment. Possible innovations include the effects of extreme temperatures on materials, realistic fire propagation, and dynamic object destruction. These upgraded Source engine technologies were discovered in the files of Deadlock, which may indicate their use in future Valve projects. Who knows, maybe advanced physics will somehow tie into a new gadget — if one is even planned.
New Gameplay Situations on a Regular Basis
Half-Life 2 is the gold standard of FPS games in terms of variety. It masterfully alternates between intense combat, exploration, puzzles, and cinematic moments, constantly changing gameplay styles and pacing. The third installment should follow the same philosophy.
In HL2, if you recall, every mission is like a separate amusement park ride with a unique feature. First, the player fights through City 17 in a guerrilla war, then speeds through canals on an airboat while fending off a helicopter. Later, they struggle to survive in a zombie-infested town, reminiscent of a horror game. Then, the game suddenly presents large open locations to explore using a buggy. Just as one mission starts to feel repetitive, the pacing shifts again — now you must avoid stepping on sand to avoid angering antlions. This continues all the way to the finale, ensuring a constantly fresh experience.
Answers to Decades-Old Questions
Even after the release of Half-Life: Alyx, fans are left with numerous questions and theories that we hope will finally be answered in HL3. For example, who or what is the G-Man? He’s clearly not human, but also not a typical alien. Who controls him? What is the ultimate goal of the Combine? Why did they even occupy Earth? And what was the purpose of their genetic experiments on humans? Also, where did the Vortigaunts go in Half-Life: Alyx? They played an important role in the resistance in previous games. In short, there are plenty of unresolved mysteries.
The End of the Story
The worst thing Valve could do after all these years of waiting is to end Half-Life 3 on another cliffhanger. If that happens, we might not see the story’s resolution until 2050 — if at all. Hopefully, the writers will be reasonable: HL3 should be a full-fledged conclusion to the current storyline, not just another link in the chain.
What Do We Want Most? Confirmation of the Rumors
More than anything, we want all the recent leaks and insider reports about Half-Life 3 to be confirmed. That the game is indeed in development, and already in its final testing phase. That the announcement really is imminent, and the release is set for this year. Many of us have been dreaming of the third installment since 2007. This dream is long overdue to come true.
***
One thing we can be sure of is the high quality of a potential Half-Life 3. Valve is so meticulous with its game development that the company would sooner cancel a project in its early stages than release something subpar. So, the long wait will surely be worth it—assuming, of course, the game actually exists.
