A third-person shooter with horror and survival elements Dead Space — a completely revamped version of Dead Space (2008), featuring a new engine, modern graphics, updated cutscenes, a number of adjustments to the plot, and all additional content.
Full of misadventures, violence, and dismemberment, Dead Space tells the story of survival in the cramped spaces of a ghost ship that sent a distress signal from deep space. The main character, Isaac Clarke, volunteered for the rescue team out of fear of losing his beloved, who remained on the ill-fated ship. The spacecraft, as if alive, resists any attempts to escape. It is overrun by necromorphs — dynamically changing zombies that can only be defeated by shooting off their limbs. This is more difficult than it seems when only engineering equipment is available.
The backstory
The near future. Humanity struggles to move into space, building space stations and colonizing planets in nearby systems. Expansion is hindered by a shortage of resources, which must be covered by colossal ships that grind planets to dust. One of them — the "Ishimura" — somewhere in deep space began to harvest the planet Aegis VII and stopped communicating. This triggered a chain of fatal events that can only be interrupted by the player.
The lore of "Dead Space" is well-developed, both in general and in detail, swelling with information from the depths of the past to the beginning of the game. In the first hours, players can learn about the local political structure, major corporations, the cult of fanatical Unitologists and their influence on all spheres of life, how the world economy works, what technologies have been invented, and even the everyday problems of future people. All of this helps to better immerse oneself in the atmosphere and events.
Visual beauty
- The remake is developed on the Frostbite engine, which provides high-quality textures, vibrant effects, a realistic lighting system, and good object physics.
- Models of Isaac, other characters, and necromorphs are handcrafted and meticulously detailed. Effects such as liquid dripping down the suit or icing over the suit's surfaces in space have been added.
- There are no characteristic problems with model animation; characters and enemies are very flexible and fluid, with dozens of new animations for movement, running, attacking, blocking, etc. This does not apply to faces.
- Every shot affects the enemy model: first, clothing and skin fly off, then flesh, after that bones break, and the final shot completely severs a limb.
- Unlike the original, the sections of the "Ishimura" in the remake are not well-lit; all hope lies on a small flashlight beam or point light sources. The player is almost always in complete darkness, which dramatically changes the visual perception and feelings from the gameplay.
- The yellow filter, popular in games of the late 00s, has been removed. And space is now truly dark, only the stars shine.
No one will hear your scream
The setup of Dead Space creates intrigue and many questions, but the writers dose out the answers and slowly immerse the player in the plot, unraveling it fully in the last quarter of the gameplay. The story, while linear, is unconventional, with a couple of plot twists and unexpected betrayals, keeping the tension until the very end.
The production successfully conveys how Isaac Clarke, finding himself in a stressful situation as he descends into the depths of the "Ishimura," reaches a peak of nervous tension and experiences horrifying hallucinations of the mind, but finds the strength to fight for his life and sanity.
In addition to the main quest, secondary storylines develop around Isaac: his relationship with his girlfriend, communication with allies, survival itself, the struggle with the ship, and the antagonist. Additional characters in the cutscenes will explain their motives on the "Ishimura" and show their character. Following the horror canon, much of this information can be gleaned from text, audio, and video recordings.
The differences of the remake in the plot
- The immersion in the events has been accelerated, lore elements are spoken in dialogues (narrated in notes) much more frequently and extensively.
- Isaac removes his helmet and speaks, and there are two voice tracks recorded — with a healthy and injured hero. Thanks to the voice actor, Isaac expresses a full range of emotions — jokes, gets angry, curses, gets scared, and more. The whisper in his head has been replaced with something much more plot-oriented.
- Character lines from the original, which replaced the hero's silence, have been given to the talkative Isaac, and new lines have been created for the characters.
- The personalities and story arcs of these characters have been adjusted so that they behave according to what is happening.
- There is more storytelling through the environment — details and decorations can build a picture of what happened in the section before the player's arrival.
- The final plot twist has been changed, and another endings has been added. Space is now not just for white people.
- Twice as many jump scares.
- The game is voiced in English, but there is a fan-made Russian localization.
Dismember and dominate
Dead Space changed traditional shooter rules. Isaac is far from a fighter; he is an aging engineer, so every action is a struggle for him — movements are slow, he can only shoot when aiming, recoil hits his hands, and he strikes with all his weight. This characteristic of the protagonist creates tension in any skirmish, especially when different enemies attack.
There are about a dozen types in the roster and two categories — regular and enhanced. The combat is based on the mechanics of severing limbs from the body, aided by the heavily altered forms of people who have turned into necromorphs, and the arsenal consists of mining tools for working with rock.
Cutters, saws, impact tools, and pipe cutters do not hit precisely but deal damage in planes, the angle of which the player determines themselves. Over time, a last-resort weapon appears — the military assault rifle. All "guns" can be upgraded to improve their basic characteristics. The alternative firing mode has expanded their applications.
Enemies are very resilient; knocking out health points or aiming for the head is just a waste of ammunition. Even when losing "parts," they won't die immediately and will continue to attack for a while. More advanced ones regenerate severed parts due to necro-mutations and become even more dangerous.
Melee combat is rudimentary — hooks with hands can push back close enemies, and stomps can finish off crawling ones. They also allow players to knock useful items out of enemies or boxes. A necromorph that gets too close can trigger a QTE, and failing it will show the protagonist's brutal fatality.
The hero's engineering suit is equipped with stasis and kinesis modules. The first slows down moving objects, from fans to necromorphs, while the second allows lifting certain items and throwing them at the same enemies.
Gameplay and single-player changes
- The world has been made completely seamless — you can run through the "Ishimura" from start to finish on foot. Fast travel using the tram has been preserved.
- The sections of the "Ishimura" have been built from scratch but inspired by the original, expanded in volume, and received many new rooms. The structure has been redesigned so that the ship feels less linear while still maintaining its tightness.
- You can return to any section before the finale to solve a puzzle, unlock a secret, or complete a side quest. Backtracking is also included in the storyline. The remake is 6-7 hours longer than the original.
- Each location has many new interior elements, decorations, and junk — exploding barrels, stasis canisters, and just heavy objects.
- A new system generates changes during backtracking — it alters light and sound sources, adds or removes fog or steam, spawns enemies from new locations, etc.
- Isaac's controls have been simplified; he moves much more nimbly, but he still can only run, with no rolls or dodges. In Dead Space 3, the rapid heartbeat when necromorphs approach has been transferred.
- The zero-gravity episodes have been completely redesigned — you can fly freely, explore hidden areas, find and attach ship parts, and knock out necromorphs.
- The weapons have been reworked. They differ more from each other, but will be useful in most encounters — switching for a specific enemy is needed much less often. The shooting feels much closer to an FPS than before.
- Improvised "guns" no longer need to be bought in the store. Everything is given for free, and it's easy to decide whether to take it with you or store it in your inventory. The upgrade system has been simplified, and scarce power nodes unlock something truly useful.
- Stasis and kinesis can be used more often, and it's harder to miss.
- Access to secret rooms and areas is regulated by a level access system, replacing power nodes. The pass levels up as you progress, making it easier to find.
- A couple of necromorphs have had their weak points changed, their behavior models adjusted, and damage rebalanced to be "even faster and deadlier."
- All bosses have been redesigned, both visually and in terms of their attack patterns and vulnerabilities, with some battles set up differently.
- A new puzzle has been added involving the distribution of power across four circuits: doors and elevators, mechanisms, lighting, and air. You can only choose a couple.
Mirage
Playing through Dead Space is a linear progression forward with the smashing of the undead and clearing of locations, searching for secrets and additional rooms with resources, solving engineering tasks and puzzles. Variety is introduced by levels without gravity, where you need to walk using magnetic boots, and levels in open space, where you must conserve oxygen.
All collected resources go into a compact inventory and are spent on various upgrades at the workbench, while credits can be used for gear, medkits, and ammo in stores.
You will need to visit every compartment and repair many systems — fighting for survival, the team has brought the Ishimura to a critical state, and the ship is ready to fall apart. The compartments of the futuristic spaceship look convincing, its structure is logically thought out and well interconnected, although the visuals suffer from uniform execution.
Suspense is built up through all channels of perception — manually crafted, dark and ominous decorations; nauseating enemies; a pile of scripted "jump scares" and QTEs for any reason; appropriate soundtracks for each moment. Hellish screams and howls of necromorphs behind the bulkheads, sounds of bursting flesh, slamming doors, and grinding mechanisms, noises of the surrounding space and more, instantly instill a sense of fear and constant danger.
Key features:
- The complete silence and zero gravity of open space shake up the gameplay, forcing players to turn their heads and navigate by instinct.
- In the game, the camera is adaptive: in aiming mode, it "jumps" over the character's shoulder, highlighting the ammo indicator; in melee combat, it follows the character's movements; during regular walking, it goes behind the hero's head.
- The interface — inventory contents, indicators, video recordings — is integrated into the game world and displayed through projections, and less often, monitors. Health and stasis indicators are shown on the protagonist's suit.

I'll say right away, the game is awesome, even if you don't like horror, give it a try.
1. Plot: The plot is awesome. It perfectly conveys the characters' emotions and feelings, and it's truly interesting to watch. There are a huge number of completely unexpected twists, and the story itself is very interesting.
2. Characters: There aren't any striking characters here like in something like Far Cry. But they are good. They are memorable, you feel their emotions and even understand some of them.
3. Gameplay: Also top-notch. This isn't just a horror shooter where you empty three clips into each enemy. No, it's not. The weapons here are incredibly interesting, and they're tailored to each enemy. Want to cut off a necromorph's legs? Go ahead. Want his arms? No problem. Maybe you'd like to fry him… Read full
Read full
I liked Dead Space Remake - I was surprised by the complexity of the passage. At the normal level, the previous parts went more or less smoothly, but here it’s completely brutal, during the game I had to switch to an easier difficulty level. In general, a difficult passage from a survival point of view. And there are also few riddles that require brain work, which is not good, take at least the same 3rd part, where the brain works more. And everything is also painfully gloomy and ugly compared to the 3rd part

Yesterday we played a wonderful game that came out in 2008, and plunging into the remake is just wonderful.
And yes, I’m talking about the game Dead Space 2023, it’s made so beautifully and takes on all the moments from 2008. It’s so interesting - sounds, surroundings and fear, someone could be around the corner, it’s present .
Yes, the characters are not all great, but the game is interesting and worth playing.
The best thing I've ever played on PC. The plot and graphics are all top notch, keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout the game.
Лучшее что либо играл на ПК. Сюжет графика всё на высоте, всю игру держит тебя в напряжении
