Many modern viewers complain that cinema has lost its ability to surprise. They say screenwriters follow the same formulas, making it easy to predict the ending. If you share this view, check out our selection. Here you can find films with truly unexpected endings.

Nightmare Alley

  • Year of production: 2021;
  • Genre: thriller, drama, noir;
  • IMDb rating: 7.0.

Guillermo del Toro is known primarily for his science fiction films. However, we decided to include his neo-noir, which is crafted in a realistic vein, in this selection. The plot centers on a charlatan posing as a psychic. For personal gain, he is willing to take increasingly wild adventures, even when his own life and the fate of his beloved wife are at stake. The ending is surprising, but at the same time, it brings the events to a close.

The Mist

  • Year of production: 2007;
  • Genre: horror, thriller, sci-fi;
  • IMDb rating: 7.1.

The film adaptation of Stephen King's novella of the same name is an atmospheric horror about an invasion of unknown monsters. People are trapped in a supermarket, but instead of coordinating their actions, they descend into madness and demand sacrifices. "The Mist" made our list largely due to its dramatic ending. It's shocking and thought-provoking.

The Devil's Advocate

10 unpredictable films
  • Year of production: 1997;
  • Genre: Thriller, Drama, Sci-Fi;
  • IMDb Rating: 7.5.

The theme of a deal with an evil spirit has been explored in dozens of works, from Goethe's classic Faust to the recent Baldur's Gate 3. And The Devil's Advocate is one of the best films on this topic. Prosperity, success, and fame are merely a veneer, concealing the true nature of events and Lucifer's cunning plan. Toward the end, the film surprises twice—first by revealing the denouement of the main story, and then by hinting at a possible sequel.

Knives Out

  • Year of production: 2019;
  • Genre: detective;
  • Kinopoisk rating: 8.2;
  • IMDb rating: 7.9.

Detective films often feature unexpected plot twists, when the killer turns out to be a character who, at first glance, has an airtight alibi. However, today, the genre is practically stagnant 1 we are usually offered new adaptations of classic works in the spirit of Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot. "Knives Out" is an example of an original detective story that is a real eye-opener. As the film progresses, dozens of Chekhov's guns are loaded, and each one fires exactly where it's supposed to.

  • Year of production: 2000;
  • Genre: drama, thriller;
  • Kinopoisk rating: 7.2;
  • IMDb rating: 7.6.

This film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis's novel tells the story of a successful banker. Beneath the surface prosperity and polish lies a true sadist. We see the protagonist commit one crime after another, purely for his own pleasure. The ending explains a lot, but also allows for several interpretations of the events.

It's worth noting that "American Psycho" has a direct sequel. We recommend not wasting your time on it and sticking with the original.

Gone Girl

  • Year of production: 2014;
  • Genre: drama, thriller, detective;
  • Kinopoisk rating: 8.0;
  • IMDb Rating: 8.1.

David Fincher often surprised audiences with unexpected plot twists. Gone Girl is no exception. A simple story about a wife's disappearance and her husband's murder charges turns into a twisted detective story. Moreover, it convincingly demonstrates that reputation and public opinion can be more important than a lack of evidence or obvious inconsistencies in a case.

Angel Heart

10 unpredictable films
  • Year of production: 1987;
  • Genre: Thriller, Horror;
  • Kinopoisk Rating: 7.4;
  • IMDb Rating: 7.2.

This film starts out as an interesting detective story. But gradually things become increasingly eerie, and towards the end, we learn of a mystical undercurrent. I'd especially like to highlight the stunning performance of Robert De Niro, who plays a character unlike any other. But even naming his specific role would be a major plot spoiler.

The Secret in Their Eyes

  • Year of production: 2009;
  • Genre: drama;
  • Kinopoisk rating: 7.3;
  • IMDb rating: 8.2.

At first glance, it might seem like a drama about the imperfections of the judicial system, where even after convincing evidence of guilt, a murderer can go free. However, towards the end, interesting details emerge. They force us to take a fresh look at the events and consider how cruel the punishment for a crime can be.

The Life of David Gale

10 unpredictable films
  • Year of production: 2002;
  • Genre: drama;
  • Kinopoisk rating: 8.1;
  • IMDb rating: 7.5.

This film showed how one person's momentary weakness and another's thirst for revenge can lead to a chain of events with tragic consequences. Ultimately, an innocent man finds himself persona non grata, losing his reputation and the opportunity to work in prestigious establishments. And at the end, an interesting plot twist awaits, shedding light on what happened. It's also worth noting that years later, the lead actor, Kevin Spacey, partly echoed David Gale's fate.

  • Year of production: 1960;
  • Genre: Horror;
  • Kinopoisk rating: 8.1;
  • IMDb rating: 8.5.

Our selection ends with a horror film from the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. Mid-20th-century cinema was often simpler than modern cinema and rarely surprised audiences with sudden plot twists. Psycho is a pleasant exception. The slow narrative in the spirit of classic film noir gives way to dynamic comebacks that are spectacular and, most importantly, unexpected.
