Ace Combat Zero: The Belkan War — Before each mission, the player receives a briefing that includes the current situation, the background and objectives of the operation, and chooses one of the available aircraft and weapons. To complete the mission, the player must achieve all its objectives within a certain time limit, and some missions include updated goals.
There are 36 vehicle models available for the player to control, including three fictional ones. Unlike previous parts, The Belkan War mainly features older aircraft, such as the F-15 Eagle, F/A-18 Hornet, and several second and third-generation fighters.
