Alien: Isolation is one of the few games where the alien feels like the master of the room, not the boss.
I went in for the atmosphere of 1979's Alien, and I got it almost without compromise: yellow lights, the hum of the station, broken machine guns, people who no longer have control over anything. Sevastopol lives its tired life, and you're not a hero, but a technician with a cardboard machine gun and a lockpick. It's the right decision. While ammo is low, every sound weighs more than a gunfight.
The xenomorph itself is the best thing in the game. It doesn't walk on rails. Hide in a closet for too long—it'll find you. Run down the hallway—it'll hear you. Throw a noisemaker—sometimes it saves you, sometimes it leads you right to you. The tension doesn't come from jump scares, but from anticipation: right now, there's no one around the corner, and that's precisely why it's scary.
Yes, the middle section drags, and some missions seem to repeat themselves. It really starts to feel that way toward the end. But even then, the atmosphere lingers. Isolation isn't about defeating a monster. It's about reaching the shuttle and still not being sure the door has closed behind you.
If you like quiet horror and the Lovejoy/Scott universe, this is a must. If you want a heroic shooter about aliens, that's a different franchise.
Alien: Isolation —
