Atomic Heart is a game that's easier to hate based on the trailers and easier to love once you're inside.
I went in for Soviet retrofuturism, talking robots, and the promise of "our BioShock." That's exactly what I got—plus a ton of weird humor, creepy dolls, and the feeling that the country has won the technological race but lost its common sense. The world is instantly captivating: concrete, neon, posters, "Bodyguard" and "Twins" look like they were dreamed up during a drunken art meeting in the 1950s. The atmosphere is captivating even when the plot starts to meander.
The combat is brutal and sometimes chaotic: polymer, melee weapons, guns, skills. Not always elegant, but spectacular. Exploring the labs and complexes is the best part: corridors, secrets, strange recordings, the feeling that you weren't invited here. The humor hits the spot sometimes, sometimes falters, but the game has character.
It's not a perfect shooter, nor is it a perfect story. But it's a game all its own: loud, dirty, beautiful, and a little crazy. If you're drawn to the Soviet aesthetic and don't mind the garbled tone, it's worth playing. Individual scenes and melodies linger long after the ending.
Atomic Heart —
