This turn-based strategy game follows battles of the American Civil War, with the player commanding either Union or Confederate forces. Civil War: 1862 is a prequel to Civil War: 1863 and includes campaigns built around battles as well as a series of non-historical challenges; most missions can be played from either side.
Forces include infantry armed with muskets or rifled muskets, artillery, generals, wagons, naval gunboats and cavalry. Infantry units have different experience levels and can adopt formations for firing in line or charging in column. Flank attacks and strategic movement shape combat, while detailed combat analysis helps assess how a battle is unfolding.
