Known under the working title Project Orion, Cyberpunk 2 has been officially in pre-production since May 2025. It's being developed by CD Projekt RED, with the core team based in new studios in Boston and Vancouver. The project is being led by Gabriel Amatangelo, who previously led the development of the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077.
The sequel will take place not only in the familiar Night City, but also in a new metropolis described as "Chicago gone wrong." The creators promise a more realistic and responsive crowd behavior system, as well as varied combat encounters and non-linear gameplay that allows players to choose their playstyle.
The game is being developed on the Unreal Engine 5, which will provide high-quality photorealistic graphics. CD Projekt RED is actively collaborating with Epic Games to transfer the best features of its previous REDengine to the new technological base.
At the moment, about 96 developers are working on the project, but in the future, the team is planned to expand to 350-500 people. Given the average development time of AAA projects at CD Projekt RED, the release of Cyberpunk 2 is expected no earlier than 2029. Cyberpunk 2 promises to be a large-scale sequel, expanding the universe of the original and offering players new locations, improved graphics and deep non-linear gameplay.
