DDRMAX Dance Dance Revolution is a music and dance simulation built around following on-screen arrows to perform dance steps. Its soundtrack features more than 65 songs and over 100 minutes of music, including licensed tracks, new dance hits and songs made exclusively for the North American release. The game also includes in-game videos.

The FREEZE ARROW option freezes arrows on screen, requiring changes to the dance steps and adding complexity to the routine. Edit Mode allows players to create custom steps, while Work Out mode tracks calories burned during play.
