A survival roguelike set in a world devastated by a zombie apocalypse, Envy the Dead follows a group of survivors travelling through infested lands toward shelter. The party consists of randomly generated characters with different skills, traits, and personalities. Exploration follows a node-based map, with random encounters that can provide supplies, bring the group into conflict with zombies, or introduce other survivors.

Encounters can demand consequential choices, such as deciding what to do when a companion is captured by bandits. Supplies are limited, and characters can be injured, infected, or killed. Battles use tower defense mechanics: the group must repel waves of zombies or other survivors with character abilities, teamwork, and defensive structures.
