NetHack: Legacy is a remastered version of NetHack, a fantasy roguelike in which the hero explores procedurally generated dungeons in search of the Amulet of Yendor. The journey involves fighting orcs, dragons, and cockatrices while accounting for interactions between items and the environment: water rusts armor, fire burns scrolls, and bright flashes cause blindness. These effects can be countered by greasing armor, storing scrolls in a bag, or shielding the eyes with a blindfold.
This independently developed variant builds on the original while smoothing some of its rougher edges. It retains an ASCII interface with retro effects, alongside mouse support and improved default controls. A built-in replay system lets players review past runs, and an expanded manual introduces the game world and its rules.
