This role-playing adventure follows a Pokémon Trainer journeying through the Sinnoh region and seeking to become the Pokémon League Champion. At the outset, the player chooses one of three partner Pokémon: Turtwig, Chimchar, or Piplup. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond faithfully retells the story of Pokémon Diamond while preserving the scale of the original towns and routes.

Players explore different locations across Sinnoh, encounter Pokémon, and take part in battles. The remake adds player-friendly features from modern Pokémon games, and its battles are presented up close. The region is also home to the Legendary Pokémon Dialga.
