Realm Royale is a multiplayer tactical shooter with a third-person view set in the Paladins universe, where only the last surviving participant wins. There are five classes available in the game, one of which can be chosen before the battle.
Genre and Gameplay
The free-to-play online shooter Realm Royale by Hi-Rez Studios was released in early access on June 5, 2018, exclusively for PC on Steam. Initially, Realm Royale was part of the shooter Paladins as a Battlegrounds mode, but due to its popularity, it was separated into an independent project. The game organically combines ideas from the "battle royale" genre and MMORPG, attracting audiences from PUBG and Fortnite.
In terms of graphics, Realm Royale significantly lags behind modern projects, offering low-polygon models of objects and characters, an outdated particle system, effects, and weak animations. The graphical shortcomings are not very noticeable thanks to the animated, hand-drawn visual style.
Key differences of Realm Royale from PUBG and Fortnite:
- The first game in the "battle royale" genre that offers modes where not only everyone is for themselves, but there are groups of 2 and 4 players, allowing for team composition from different characters;
- Characters of 5 classes, each with their own style and gameplay tactics, strengths, and weaknesses;
- Each character has 2 weapon slots, 2 ability slots, and possesses 1 default passive ability;
- Minimal menus, not even for inventory, all information is displayed along with the game interface;
- Fast travel is available immediately through summoning a horse;
- No damage from falling from heights;
- Four classes of items, weapons, armor, and abilities, marked by color: common - white, rare - green, epic - purple, and legendary - gold;
- Items drop from chests and defeated enemies, and can be dismantled into shards to later forge a legendary item or ability at the forge;
- With death, the game does not end; the character turns into a noisy chicken and can quickly escape from the killer to later respawn.
Champions
- The Mage uses powerful spells instead of firearms, levitates above the ground, and benefits from potions.
- The Warrior is strong in close combat, uses axe throws to fend off enemies at a distance, and constantly regenerates health.
- The Hunter reloads weapons faster than others, uses proximity mines, and can quickly approach or retreat from a target.
- The Assassin creates smoke screens, can become invisible, teleport, or throw a knockback grenade. Moves faster than the rest.
- The Engineer supports friends with turrets and rockets, constantly regenerates armor, but is weak and vulnerable in close combat.
Game World
At the time of the alpha test, Realm Royale has only one map — the fantasy Kingdom, with new maps to be added later.
The Kingdom is a spacious island-type map with all kinds of climates and landscapes. There are mountains and forests, fields and meadows, villages and cities, dungeons and rifts — a bit of everything. Any house on the map can be entered, and chests with useful contents are scattered everywhere.
Fornices are placed everywhere, where you can create better gear and weapons. When the forge is active, it attracts the attention of other players and becomes a focal point of action.
Multiplayer
The online mode of Realm Royale is very similar to other battle royale genre games. 100 people participate in a round, and the last player or group of players remaining alive wins.
At first, everyone gathers on a small island, after which they load into a zeppelin and can jump anywhere on the map they wish. Every two minutes, the game world shrinks, with deadly fog taking up space.
Right after the superhero landing, you need to search for boxes with ammunition, weapons, and abilities, then track down other players, kill them, collect their inventory contents, boxes, and upgrade gear at the forge. The game does not welcome those who ignore combat for too long.
Gear, weapons, and abilities should be constantly improved and changed to suit the chosen play style, allies, and current situation. The path to victory goes through teamwork — all squad members exchange shards, heal each other's wounds, and restore armor, as well as cover a player who has found themselves in trouble.
