Red Dead Online is a multiplayer mode with a third-person view of the action-adventure game Red Dead Redemption 2. It offers story missions, cooperative and competitive modes, several variations of "battle royale" — all intertwined in new exciting ways. It periodically receives new content in the form of updates.
Story and Characters
Like in GTA 5, in Red Dead Online, players start by creating a character in an advanced editor – they can choose gender, body type, set unique facial features, tattoos, and scars, as well as select clothing from their wardrobe. Later, clothing can be bought and changed.
Unlike GTAO, the events of the RDR 2 multiplayer are not connected to the single-player game and take place before its events, with all content available without completing the single-player campaign. However, both modes share some common NPC characters, although there are also new NPC quest-givers.
After creating a character, the player finds themselves chained in a wagon with three criminals being escorted to execution from prison. The character has been framed for the murder of an important person, whose wife, Mrs. Leclerc, wants revenge on the real killers, and it is up to the player to help her.
The standard action game plot unfolds with a lengthy story about the main character's terrifying revenge, featuring quests that, unlike the single-player, seem like a silly parody of the western genre. Although there are well-developed ones as well.
As for story missions, there is a strict division: some are completed solo, while others must be done in a group. The story in RDO serves more as a tutorial guide, explaining gameplay features.
Social Interaction
In RDO, of course, you can play alone, but teaming up with other players in a gang will unlock new opportunities for all squad members: boss battles, competitions in open-world challenges, fights with other gangs in spontaneous skirmishes, and other mind-blowing competitions designed for 16-32 players.
To encourage players to band together, the penalty for illegal killing has been reduced. Player squads are more likely to attack lone cowboys, while solo players are much less likely to confront a group.
If a conflict arises between players, they can resolve it in two ways:
- Negotiations — both players talk for no more than 10 minutes and can verbally resolve the conflict, using weapons is prohibited;
- Gunfight – players have 3 minutes for a shootout. The one who scores the most kills wins.
Avoiding unnecessary conflicts in free mode is aided by the style system – aggressive and defensive. Activating the latter makes it easier to explore the world, avoid unnecessary skirmishes, and in case of an attack, damage will be less. Notifications and auto-invitations are turned off.
Progression is implemented through a leveling system, with 100 levels available as of 2019. The higher the level, the more content is available, for example:
- weapons and modifications for them;
- camp improvements;
- crafting item recipes;
- breeds of horses and their gear.
By completing any tasks in the game, the character gains experience, which accumulates into character levels (there are also Role levels). Interestingly, for some player levels, players are rewarded with a treasure map, which they can use to find money and valuable items.
As players level up, special ability cards become available. Players can equip a limited number of cards, thus creating a unique character. The higher the character's level, the more cards and slots are available, which increases build variability.
For victories in online battles, characters earn gold, RDO$ (used for weapons, ammunition, gear) and experience, which unlocks access to abilities like "Eagle Eye" (implemented through cards inserted into slots).
Levels can continue to be gained, but this will only affect gameplay if the "Outlaw Pass" is owned — a battle pass that grants access to exclusive content: single-player and gang quests, camp upgrades, and various cosmetics, such as a companion dog.
In Red Dead Online, there are 100 levels of the "battle pass," and the longer you play, the more content the player receives — meaning its contents need to be unlocked. Like in other service games, the battle pass is available for a limited time, after which a new one must be purchased. This can be done by farming gold in-game or buying it with real money.
Gameplay
The game starts with a newcomer without reputation and money – all of this must be earned through shootouts, various events, robberies, and other activities with other players.
Initially, the gameplay in multiplayer did not differ much from the single-player mode, especially since all familiar mechanics were present: (hunting, fishing, treasure hunting, robberies, character customization and all weapons and ammunition, the same physics model. However, as multiplayer evolved into a standalone mode, changes were made with a greater emphasis on interaction between players.
Multiplayer has a different item cost and overall economic model: RDO$ earned in the game, and gold, which can be purchased with real money or through tedious grinding. Microtransactions affect gameplay – gold can be used to buy camp upgrades, horses, higher-level items, as well as clothing and appearance items like holsters.
Unlike RDR 2, honor affects nothing except access to missions and status in free roam. With a high honor rating, players can receive more missions to protect against criminals, while with low honor, they can receive more robberies and rescues of criminals. Honor can be increased or decreased for gold by switching sides and completing all available content.
Another difference is the class or role system, which as of the end of 2019 includes four:
- Bounty Hunters catch criminals (from solo players to full gangs) on contract. NPCs work immediately, but with real people — criminals — the consent of the other party is required. The highest skill in this matter is to deliver the target(s) to prison alive.
- A trader is a free entrepreneur. He hunts for the necessary animals and sells their skins to his partner Cripps, who supplies goods to other traders and clients. A tempting catch for criminals.
- A collector explores the game world in search of valuable items. These can be Tarot cards, buried treasures, or hidden money – all of which are collected into a complete collection. A job with minimal risk... until you find the treasure.
- A moonshiner runs his own underground workshop producing alcohol. There's plenty of work: obtaining raw materials, selling goods at various points in the game world, and fending off gangs that are after the business. The workshop can be equipped with a bar, a space for musicians, and a dance floor, which will bring in additional income.
Roles offer new abilities for the character, additional quests, unique items, and of course, reward efforts with gold and experience, which goes into the class level, not the overall progression. Each class has 20 levels with its own ranks: novice, amateur, expert, and veteran.
Additionally, each player has their own personal camp, as well as a group camp if they are part of one. In the camp, you can rest, change appearance, create missing items, cook food, and so on. A tent system has been introduced – depending on the style, the player receives a certain bonus when entering free roam and resting in the camp.
In one of the updates, the controls were revamped to reduce the number of button presses and speed up character actions, especially in combat (aiming, cocking the trigger, and reloading are faster). Rockstar regularly adds content (weapons, clothing, masks and holsters, horse breeds, quests), but it is only available in multiplayer.
Multiplayer game
Let's list the main modes available at the beginning of 2019:
- Free Roam – multiplayer PvP events in various parts of the map;
- Races – horse races between players in circular, sprint with checkpoints, and open race modes;
- Make It Count — a "battle royale" where players fight each other in a constantly shrinking game area. There can be only one winner. Only bows with arrows or throwing options are available as weapons;
- Hostile Territory (battle for territory) – you need to capture an area and defend it from other players;
- Most Wanted — everyone fights for themselves, but the more you kill, the more points the player who kills you will receive;
- Name Your Weapon — everyone fights for themselves, but the number of points earned depends on the chosen weapon. The easier it is to kill with the weapon, the fewer points you will receive for the kill;
- Shootout – a regular deathmatch where everyone is for themselves, and the winner is determined by the number of kills.
- Team Shootout – two teams of players fight against each other and earn points for kills. The team that scores the most points wins the deathmatch.
As part of the 2019 updates, Red Dead Online received the following permanent modes:
- Gun Rush – the second "battle royale," featuring all firearms, with the option to play solo or with friends. Up to 32 players total.
- "Combat Trophies" – a competitive mode where two teams on horseback must capture a flag and carry it to their base;
- "Target Races" – a competitive mode where players race against each other and must hit a target at full speed to pass a checkpoint;
- "Blow Away" – two teams compete to see who can destroy the opponent's camp the fastest. It would be fine, but you have to blow up the opponent's camp several times;
- "Looting" – two teams of players compete to see who can steal the most. First, the game places a cargo in a random location on the map, and players must pick it up and carry it to their base as quickly as possible. Then the cargo runs out, and players must steal it from the opponents' base.
- Continuation of story missions – after the showdown at Fort Mercer, which concluded the stock story, players will assist Mrs. Leclerc in uncovering the mystery of who is behind her husband's murder. Content for both honorable and dishonorable players.
- New free roam missions – after accepting a quest from old acquaintances from the campaign, the player will embark on an exciting and quite lengthy adventure.
- Dynamic events – while traveling through the game world, you can encounter townsfolk and travelers in need of help and protection, or bandits looking to rob someone.
- "Occupation" – an unusual mode where players capture pieces of land and try to hold onto what they have already taken. The team that captures the most opponents by the end of the time wins.
Temporary events have also appeared in the game, such as tracking down and killing a legendary criminal or surviving in the "Under Cover of Night" showdown (a group of players, ordinary mortals, must defeat fast, strong, and resilient predator players). They are available for a very limited time, after which they disappear. It is still unknown whether Rockstar plans to make them a roster or if they will always be unique.

Reviews and ratings
The single-player game is simply a masterpiece with a cool plot, but the online game is just terrible.
there is interest in online until the roles are opened and completed, after all the roles are completed there is nothing to do in the game
graphics 10 out of 10
sound and environment 5 out of 10 no matter how hard I tried nothing it didn’t help, and RockStar just threw up their hands. the sound in single player is simply amazing, but online it’s stupid what you’ll hear
plot 10 out of 10 for single player, no online plot
average online there are few players, and those that exist are mostly kind of strange. people with a high level are trying to kill and interfere with those who have a low level in the game
it’s up to everyone to decide whether to take it or not, but you can just have a look and spend a couple of evenings
RDO promised to be interesting, but...
So, what did we get? What we got is this: before us is a multiplayer version of the best open-world Western game of all time, which Rocky simply gave up on. If at the beginning of RDO's life new events were often released in it, now, due to the fact that Rockstar Games is puffing with might and main on GTA VI, this game is dead.
I went through the entire plot of RDO with a friend - and yes, it’s quite good, you can play it and it will be quite interesting. But what then? What to do in the game after you have completed all the tasks, traveled a fair amount on the map, seen enough beautiful views and taken part in a couple of competitive games?
Answer: yes, practically nothing. All you have to do is ride around the West on your best horse in the best outf… Read full
Read full
The game was clearly made to quickly get money and leave.
There are 100 people online, 60 of them are cheaters.
Lots of bugs and no improvements, the idea is brilliant and 5 points purely as a fan of the solo game RDR2.
And you still have to buy for it, people won’t play this hat for free.
The best thing that the developers can do with this game is to transfer all sorts of additional quests and main ones, professions and cosmetics alone.
After RDR 2, I thought this is the coolest company that makes games and GTA 6 should be taken anyway, now I’m not sure if they’ll just want to make money on the hype again.
