Spasim

One of the first networked 3D space simulators, offering multiplayer battles in open space. The game allows up to 32 participants to control ships, explore four planetary systems, and engage in team battles for control over the galactic expanses.

Visually, Spasim uses wireframe 3D graphics with an image refresh approximately once per second, creating a unique feeling of early virtual space. Ship control is based on working with coordinates, and the armament includes phasers and manually guided photon torpedoes, requiring precision and calculation.

Created for the PLATO network, Spasim combines an experimental approach to network gameplay and educational elements, using space battles as a way to introduce players to three-dimensional space and the coordinate system. This game became one of the early examples of how multiplayer virtual worlds could go beyond ordinary text interfaces.
