Star Soldier R is a vertically scrolling space shooter built around scoring as many points as possible within a time limit. In the two- and five-minute modes, the ship flies upward from the bottom of the screen, firing at enemy ships and structures; the shorter mode features one stage and a boss, while the longer adds a second stage with its own boss. Quick Shot mode tests firing speed.
Weapon and shield power-ups can be collected during a run. The Force System lets players gather up to five satellites, which can orbit the ship for defense or be sent out to add firepower. Repeated play and learning different ways to earn bonus points can improve scores, which are compared with those of other players in regional leaderboards.
