A remake of the legendary role-playing shooter System Shock. The game takes place in the year 2072, where all resources on Earth have been practically depleted... Read more
The worst immersive sim I've ever played. And that's no exaggeration.
Let's start with the gameplay. The combat is simply a pain. There's no real feel to the gunplay, the weapons feel like they're firing cotton wool, and the enemies are bullet sponges that can take half your HP with one hit. There are almost no health packs, so you're either crawling along on your last few hit points or rewinding half an hour of gameplay because saves are only available at checkpoints. Cyberspace is a special kind of punishment. These segments are so pathetic and unfair that you want to turn the game off and never come back.
The level design is a labyrinth for the sake of a labyrinth. There's constant backtracking, you're running through the same corridors because the map is useless, and you can only find the right door by trial and error. No markers, no clues—and it's presented as "respect for the player," but in reality, it's just bad game design from 1994 that they didn't bother to rework.
The plot? An AI wants to destroy humanity. Damn original. The characters? There aren't any, you just read notes and listen to audio logs where the actors overact so much you want to turn off the sound.
And now let's compare it to Prey. Prey 2017 is what System Shock Remake should have been. Variable level design, real freedom in decisions, ability combinations, an interesting plot twist. Sure, Prey has its own balance issues, but at least the gameplay there is enjoyable, not painful. System Shock Remake feels like a game from the past that was simply stretched over with new textures and told, "here you go, enjoy." The difference between them is like the difference between a modern immersive sim and a museum exhibit that they forgot to restore.
The only thing I can commend is the visuals. The station looks atmospheric, and the views of Saturn from the windows are truly beautiful. But the atmosphere won't save you when the game is simply not fun.
What I liked: the visuals
What I didn't like: everything
Time played: less than 15 hours
