ZZT is an action-adventure game that combines puzzles and combat with object-oriented programming. To complete Town of ZZT, players must master 43 boards filled with creatures and puzzles, relying on quick reflexes and careful planning. Other worlds include The Caves of ZZT, The Dungeons of ZZT, and Underground City of ZZT.

An included editor lets players create their own worlds from ready-made objects. Objects can also be controlled with small programs written in the built-in ZZT-OOP language.
