As in any survival game, weapons in Voidtrain play a crucial role. Throughout the main campaign, you'll encounter various enemies: soldiers, bugs, sharks, and other denizens of the void. To stand your ground against them, you’ll need a good gun. In this guide, we’ll break down the complex weapon crafting system and share some tips on crafting firearms in the game.

Basic Information About Weapon Crafting

In Voidtrain, the weapon system revolves around two main types: the unremovable revolver and modular two-handed guns. The “Old Pal” revolver is your starter weapon—it’s given to you at the very beginning, has infinite ammo, and allows you to swap out its own modules as you progress. All other guns are procedurally generated from combinations of different weapon modules. You can rebuild these guns at the weapon workbench, or sometimes find complete ones as loot from enemies at outposts and depots.

Modules affect not only the base stats, but also the weapon type and shot effects. Typically, a firearm requires four main parts: barrel, magazine, frame, and grip, but it can also have optional ones like a stock or sight. With certain special modules, a weapon can change its shot element—called a core. Cores can be frost, fire, or toxic.

Weapon Stats

Basic rifle stats are described by a set of eight characteristics:

  • Damage. Indicates how much damage each shot deals. For rifles and shotguns, this is the total damage of all projectiles fired with a single trigger pull.
  • Fire Rate. Determines how quickly the weapon shoots: the higher the number, the faster the fire rate. However, whether you can shoot in bursts depends on the grip module’s mechanics, not just the fire rate stat.
  • Reload. The time it takes to reload, in seconds—the lower, the better.
  • Magazine Capacity. The number of rounds you can fire before reloading: the higher the value, the longer you can shoot without swapping mags.
  • Accuracy. Describes hip-fire accuracy (spread when firing without aiming).
  • Stability. Reflects recoil: how much vertical and horizontal kick the weapon has. Higher stability means it’s easier to keep your aim on target.
  • Range. The effective shooting distance.
  • Handling. This stat shows how quickly you can switch to this weapon.

Balancing these weapon stats properly will help you create the best possible gun.

Weapon Components

Here’s how each component affects your weapon’s stats:

  • Barrel affects all stats except handling and reload, and determines the weapon type.
  • Magazine impacts reload speed and capacity, and also sets the projectile’s effect.
  • Frame has a major influence on base damage and adds a core slot.
  • Grip affects handling and sets the fire mode (auto/burst/single).
  • Stock and sight are auxiliary modules that boost stability and accuracy, respectively.

Modules come in five quality tiers, from common to legendary. Higher tiers generally provide better stats and more bonus effects.

Magazine modules don’t just improve reload and capacity—they also add effects to your weapon. You’ll find elemental buffs like fire and poison (which add extra damage), and ice (which can freeze enemies).

You’ll need ammo to fire your weapons, which you can craft at the workbench using iron ingots and unstable chemicals.

Weapon Durability

Every weapon has its own durability. When durability gets low, guns can jam or even stop firing entirely. Make sure to repair your weapons regularly, but don’t expect to keep one gun forever—after multiple repairs, the basic stats of its parts can degrade.

How to Get Weapon Modules

To get modules or ready-made weapons, you’ll need to clear outposts and defeat soldiers in depots.

You can also get legendary weapon modules from lottery machines. Every depot has one of these machines, which require tokens to play. Tokens can also be earned by defeating soldiers in the area.

Pro tip about the machine: If you want to guarantee the best weapon early on, use the save feature. Gather as many tokens as you can, head to a depot, and save your progress. Play the machine until you run out of tokens, then reload your save. Repeat this process until you get all the modules you want.

Another way to get modules is by completing the special “Arena” mode. After winning five waves, you’ll be rewarded with three chests, which can be opened at the depot. There’s a chance you’ll find the modules you need inside.

Weapon Crafting Tips

Always go for the best. Legendary module versions should always be your top priority. They offer more features, higher base stats, and extra buffs.

Weapons have stat caps, so some parts and combinations can’t reach their full potential.

  • Fire Rate: 1000
  • Reload Speed: 1.1
  • Accuracy: 100
  • Stability: 100
  • Range: 30

Additional Tips:

  • For maximum damage, magazines with fast reload speeds are usually the best choice. The strongest options are “Volumetric Escalation” or others from the same series.
  • If you pick a magazine with a damage bonus, you can boost your damage by up to +15%.
  • Sometimes a mid-tier magazine with a good damage bonus can outperform a legendary magazine with faster reload.
  • For status effects, shotguns or high-damage rifles work best, since status effect damage is based on your weapon’s damage.
