Take-Two Halts Borderlands 4 Development for Nintendo Switch 2
Take-Two Interactive has announced the suspension of the Borderlands 4 version for Nintendo Switch 2. The game was removed from the publisher's release schedule, although it was originally planned for release on October 3, 2025 — just three weeks after launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
We made the difficult decision to suspend development of this version. Our focus is on quality post-release content for players on other platforms and game optimization.
The Switch 2 version was delayed at the last moment — literally a week before the planned September 2025 release. Gearbox Software explained the delay as necessary for additional work on the game and the desire to add cross-saves. All digital pre-orders in the Nintendo eShop were cancelled in accordance with the store's policy.
The situation looks particularly strange considering that Borderlands 4 for Switch 2 was shown at PAX Australia in October 2025, albeit with noticeable performance issues and blurry graphics. The game also received a full five-minute Creator's Voice video as part of the Nintendo Switch 2 presentation, where Gearbox head Randy Pitchford enthusiastically talked about the console version.
After its September 2025 release, Borderlands 4 attracted over 2.5 million players, but Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick admitted that sales were "slightly below expectations," partly due to performance issues on PC. By November, the shooter had lost almost its entire audience.
