Valve Testing Lepton — A Tool to Run Android Apps on Steam Deck

According to data from SteamDB and internal Steam store pages, Valve is developing a compatibility technology codenamed Lepton. The new tool appears to be intended for running Android apps and games on Linux-based devices, including the Steam Deck and the upcoming VR headset.

From a technical perspective, Lepton likely uses an approach similar to existing solutions like Waydroid, which allow Android to run inside a Linux environment. For Valve, this is a kind of evolution of its previous work on Proton — a technology that successfully adapts Windows games for Linux. The emergence of such a tool is also linked to the company's plans to release the standalone Steam Frame VR headset, which runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor — in this case, Lepton could provide access to mobile content in virtual reality.

Mentions of the androidarm64 architecture have already been added to the Steamworks SDK, indirectly confirming work on such compatibility. At the same time, a large-scale release of major Android games on the SteamOS platform remains questionable; the main reason cited is the limited number of AAA-level projects in the mobile segment that could interest a desktop PC or handheld system audience.

In the future, Lepton could be integrated into SteamOS, giving Steam Deck users access to Android game libraries. However, in the near term, the focus is likely to be precisely on the VR direction, where control via touch interfaces seems more organic. Many modern mobile games already support traditional controllers, which would theoretically simplify their adaptation.

The work on Lepton demonstrates Valve's strategy of gradually expanding the SteamOS ecosystem and creating a universal gaming platform not tied to a single operating system. No official statements from the company on this matter have been made yet.
