Telegram Beta for iOS Adds Full-Screen Markdown Editor With Advanced Formatting Tools

Telegram has launched a full-screen Markdown editor in the beta version of its iOS app, giving users a powerful new tool for creating richly formatted messages. Available in Telegram beta version 12.9.0, this update replaces the previous AI editor button with a dedicated Markdown option, allowing users to craft structured content directly within the messenger.

When activated, the new Markdown editor expands the input field to a full-screen interface and introduces a comprehensive formatting toolbar above the keyboard. This toolbar provides quick access to paragraph styles, lists, tables, file attachments, links, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, emoji, and code blocks, making it easier to compose long or complex messages.

The expanded Markdown support is especially useful for drafting instructions, notes, or technical documentation within Telegram. Users can now format messages with greater precision and structure, thanks to features like LaTeX (for mathematical notation), tables, quotes, and slideshows, which have been supported since version 12.8.

In June 2026, Telegram also introduced related enhancements, such as enabling links in poll answers and allowing AI bots to be assigned as administrators. On June 14, 2026, the extended editor became available for bots, further broadening its utility across the platform.

Previously, Telegram's AI message editor could correct errors, change writing style, and translate text, but required at least three lines of input to activate. The new Markdown editor now takes its place, streamlining the process for users who need advanced formatting.

Currently, the Markdown editor is only accessible to beta program participants. However, Telegram founder Pavel Durov has promised that the feature will roll out to all users by the end of June 2026.
