Released in 2017, Destiny 2 is a sequel to the first-person MMOFPS Destiny. The last city of humanity fell under the assault of a massive army led by Ghaul, an ambitious commander of the sinister Red Legion. He captured the Traveler, stripped the Guardians of their powers, and sent the city's inhabitants fleeing. Players will embark on journeys through mysterious uncharted worlds of our Solar System in search of new weapons and powerful combat abilities. To crush the Red Legion and challenge Ghaul, heroes of humanity scattered across the system must come together, stand united, and reclaim their home.
Genre and Gameplay
The online first-person shooter Destiny 2 is focused on multiplayer gameplay but also offers a story campaign for solo or cooperative play. It features elements of role-playing and crafting.
The gameplay of the sequel has shifted from the "pure MMOFPS" formula towards greater freedom of choice and entertainment. Right from the start, players can participate in public events, and after a few hours, raids and competitive modes become available.
There are more weapons, and they are more diverse, divided into three categories: kinetic (damage to health), energy (damage to shields), and power (damage to armor). The first two categories include regular weapons—revolvers, submachine guns, and assault rifles—but they have different damage types. The power category includes powerful sniper rifles, grenade launchers, and rocket launchers.
The leveling system has been revamped, with perks grouped into sets of 3-4, but they can be switched according to the combat situation. The physics of shooting has become more realistic, and the artificial intelligence is smarter. Now it can retreat, dodge bullets, and call for help.
The Game World
There is no open world in Destiny 2, but there are many large locations on different planets of the Solar System, between which players travel on a spaceship. The levels are still corridor-like, but they are designed in several layers and contain many rooms without enemies, enhancing the atmosphere.
In terms of design, the levels feature a variety of landscapes and structures, with many small details. The scale of the constructions is very well conveyed—from a small resistance shed to a colossal arcology on Titan. Additionally, each location has its unique atmosphere.
Story
The events of Destiny 2 take place in the 28th century—humanity has experienced a golden age during which it conquered the planets and moons of the Solar System, followed by a collapse. On the brink of extinction, humans found the Traveler—a mysterious sphere that provided them with new technologies and allowed them to survive as a species.
Having built the last city on Earth and a high wall, humans believed they were securely protected. The Guardians, who received the gift of immortality from the Traveler, guarded them from the dangers of the outside world.
A few years after the events of the original, an alien named Dominus Ghaul arrives with a massive army, dreaming of seizing the power of the Traveler. Scattered across the system, the Guardians are disorganized and divided.
The player is required to find and unite three commanders: To the Vault, Ikora, and Cayde, for what he will visit Titan, Io, and Cayde-6, and then lead a counterattack on the City and defeat the Red Legion. Each story mission has 2-3 additional quests that are manually completed and do not repeat.
Races and classes
There are three character classes in the game:
- Hunter — a mix of assassin and scout from MMORPGs — a fast and mobile unit for reconnaissance and flanking, with no obstacles.
- Warlock — a battle mage with powerful abilities, controlling crowds and bosses, as well as supporting allies.
- Titan — a classic tank, attacking enemies head-on with huge damage in various ways.
The difference between classes comes down to abilities, melee combat techniques, grenades used, and movement speed.
As you level up, all classes gain specialization based on damage type — fire, electric, and void (magic). You can switch between subclasses on the fly.
Single player and cooperative
The solo mode of Destiny 2 is required to familiarize yourself with the game and its possibilities — how to level up, what enemies exist, how to travel between worlds, and so on. This stage can also be completed with a friend, the details will not change.
Activities are quite simple — shooting everything in sight, completing story missions, and public events for everyone. You can quickly try your hand at PvP, but the main features unlock after reaching level 20.
Multiplayer game
There are many network activities in Destiny 2, and they are updated every Tuesday:
- this is character development through resource loot and perk points;
- searching for rare weapons, armor, and gear, turning into quests for dozens of hours;
- exploring new locations, like the Dreaming City, and finding new characters;
- completing various contracts from key NPCs;
- raiding with 6 players — the most challenging content, requiring an understanding of all game mechanics and teamwork skills;
- collecting collections, searching for secrets and easter eggs.
The "Crucible" mode is PvP with two options — play for fun in "quick matches" (deathmatch) or in "competitive matches" (team deathmatch). The reward for participating in this mode is higher, and player capabilities are maximally balanced.
Interesting features:
- weapons and gear can be upgraded using modifiers found when dismantling unnecessary items;
- complex network activities, whose completion even by an experienced and leveled team will take an hour or two.
- game as a service — in the support cycle, Bungie released expansions with new, numerous content — Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris, Destiny 2: Warmind, Destiny 2: Forsaken , and others.

And so, having played 700+ hours, I will say the following: 1) The world of the game is interesting, when you launch it for the first time, you will be surprised at every location. 2) Raids are the most interesting thing in the game, if, of course, there are 6 people played to complete them. 3) The company is boring, IMHO. 4) And of course the incredible amount of grinding, the biggest drawback of this game.
An excellent MMO, and it's free too. Played 50+ hours. An immense number of activities, opportunities, tons of additional content and a colorful world.
I don’t like MMOs at all, but this game really appealed to me.
Отличное MMO, да ещё и бесплатное. Наиграл 50+ часов. Безмерное колличество активностей, возможностей, тонны доп.контента и красочный мир.
Я вообще не люблю MMO, но в эта игра мне прям зашла.
I was not familiar with the first part, I hardly played the Halo series. Overall, I like the game, it's addictive. The picture is pleasing to the eye, the gameplay is fun and overall everything is very good. The game is firmly entrenched in the Steam library and I can confidently say that there are still hundreds of hours of gameplay ahead.
I grabbed it for free at a giveaway, as someone who came from a Warframe, the grind didn’t scare me too much, the plot seemed interesting. It only weighs 106+ GB, with my 500GB disk.
but the game deserves attention, at least you need to go through the campaign.
хапнул бесплатно на раздаче, как выходец с варфрейма меня не сильно напугал гринд, сюжет вроде интересен. весит только вот 106+ гб, с моим то 500гб диском.
но игра заслуживает внимания, как минимум компанию пройти нужно.
