An expansion for Europa Universalis 4, Res Publica adds new ways to govern a nation, with mechanics for republics and dictatorships. Its new Republican Dictatorship government lets the player choose between gaining power at the cost of Republican Tradition and preserving that tradition while losing power.

A faction system features Aristocrats, Traders, and Guilds. Spending power increases a faction’s influence and grants its bonuses. In the Dutch Republic, elections depend on whether Statists or Orangists hold power: Statists trigger elections every four years, while Orangists hold no election until the ruler dies. The expansion also adds new idea groups and further options for developing a trade empire.
