Fantasy MMORPG with an open world, set in war-torn lands 150 years before the events of the first Lineage. For many years, the gods fought against each other for power and influence, while the lands were shaken by cataclysms. But ordinary mortals found the strength to carry on. Legacy is an updated version of Lineage 2 with classic gameplay.
The backstory of the Lineage world
According to in-game mythology, the entire universe was created by two divine beings — the light Einhasad and the dark Gren Kain. For a long time, they existed within the Shard, which had been around since the beginning of time. But due to the actions of Einhasad and Gren, it shattered, and from its fragments, the heavens, earth, and water were formed. The spirit that had been in the Shard all this time led to the emergence of giants. For a long time, they felt like the masters of the world.
Later, the gods had children. Each of them, with the help of their mother, created their own race. Thus, orcs, elves, dwarves, and arthas appeared. The father wanted to replicate his wife's achievements, but his creations turned out to be weak, foolish, and cowardly, yet cunning. We are talking about humans.
But this was not Gren's only mistake. He seduced Shilen, the creator of elves, and from their union, dragons were born. Einhasad rejected her own daughter. In response, she gathered her children and demons to take revenge on the gods. They faced defeat, despite the suddenness of the attack and numerous casualties, and the remnants of these armies rushed to the earth.
Shilen herself began to rule the underworld, while the power over water passed to her sister Eva. But she could not cope with the spirits of this element, leading to the Great Flood. Only through the efforts of the mother was it possible to stop the disasters that claimed thousands of lives across the world.
The actions of the gods disappointed the giants. They stopped worshipping the immortals and began experimenting with living beings to enhance them and create an army capable of challenging the deities. This provoked the wrath of Einhasad. She used the Hammer of Despair to destroy the capital of the giants. Only the intervention of Gren Kain saved this people from complete annihilation. Since then, they have been forced to remain on a narrow patch of land, atoning for their sins before the gods. And Einhasad herself promised not to interfere in earthly matters.
But the world did not find the long-awaited peace. After the giants' departure, other races began to fight each other. Humans rose above the other peoples, and together with the elves, they defeated the orcs, and then struck against their own allies. But humanity was not united; it split into states that waged war against each other. The kingdom of Elmoreden became more influential than others, but its Golden Age came to an end with the aging of ruler Bayuma. Quarrels and new battles with the orcs began, and they had to fight in the face of a sharp cold from the north and a deadly epidemic from the south. The kingdom of Aden emerged victorious from this clash. Later, its ruler signed a treaty with the kings of Elmore and Gracia. Thus, the war ended, and peace was established.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Lineage 2 can be described as classic for MMORPG genre games. You will control a character from a third-person perspective, complete quests, and clear dungeons. You need to attack mobs and bosses using regular hits and special abilities. Access to active skills is provided through a quick access panel. If desired, you can use auto-fight, where the hero will automatically use skills to defeat the opponent.
As you level up, new professions will become available, and at level 105, you will have the opportunity to unlock a second class. After that, you can switch between them as needed.
PvP Component
Unlike many MMORPGs, fighting with live players can happen anywhere in the game world. When one player attacks another, a challenge is offered to engage in a duel. If a participant refuses to fight, they can still be killed, but the attacker's karma will turn negative, and they will receive a penalty in the form of negative effects. Their nickname will be marked in red so that other players understand they pose a danger.
In addition to duels, the game features multiplayer modes designed for hundreds of participants. Among them:
- “World Olympics”. A series of battles in arenas where winners take titles from losers;
- “Festival of Chaos”. Battles among many players until only one winner remains. A kind of battle royale;
- “Curse Weapon Hunt”. The owner of a special blade must kill as many other players as possible to receive a reward. In turn, they will start looking for the one who took this weapon to reclaim it;
- “Castle Sieges”. A struggle for castles between clans that occurs once every two weeks. Those who hold the fortress receive bonuses. But after 14 days, players will have to defend against other factions that want to take the citadel for themselves;
- “Sieges of Another Dimension”. An analog of the previous mode, but between different servers.
Character Races
At the start of the game, during the setup of your hero's parameters, you are offered to choose one of seven races:
- Humans. Balanced characteristics, a wide selection of classes;
- Elves. Show themselves as excellent mages, archery masters, and great bards;
- Dark Elves. Specialize in death magic and shadow power;
- Orcs. Possess immense strength and endurance. Born warriors, but can also be decent shamans;
- Dwarves. Despite their small stature, they have an advantage in battles against multiple opponents. In addition, dwarves specialize in gathering materials and other useful resources;
- Kamael. Specialize in soul magic, during leveling warriors can become mages. It is also worth noting that their skills differ depending on gender;
- Artheas. These beautiful beings are masters of alchemy.
You also need to decide on a specialization between warriors and mystics (wizards). During leveling, class choices become available. You can determine what spells your mage will master or, for example, focus on agility and archery instead of brute strength in melee combat.
Features of the Legacy version
Like many MMORPGs, Lineage 2 has changed and transformed over time. However, not all fans liked the changes that occurred in this online project. Therefore, it was decided to launch servers with the basic rules that were relevant at the time of release in 2003. Something similar later happened with World of Warcraft.
Lineage 2 Legacy offers a return to the original version of the game, with familiar scenery, hardcore leveling, and the necessity to slay monsters in large quantities. Those who played it in the early 2000s will definitely feel a sense of nostalgia and remember their youth. Newcomers can get acquainted with the classic of the genre.
As before, interaction with other players plays an important role here. And it's not just about PvP mode with duels and other activities. For example, you can participate in joint raids against particularly strong bosses. Valuable items can be sold, exchanged, or simply given to allies. This is especially important considering that they often drop randomly, so you can spend many hours hoping for a lucky turn of events. But if you make a good offer to another player who has the gear set you need, you can get it without wasting extra time.
And although the game's mechanics remain old-school, it regularly receives additional content. For example, at the end of 2024, the Hellbound update was released, consisting of several chapters. It offers to venture to the Island of Hell, visit the Ancient Temple of Orbis and the Primal Island, battle four raid bosses, and enhance your stats in the Aden Laboratory. As a reward for slaying monsters, you will receive experience, valuable gear, and consumables. The focus is on leveled characters who need new challenges.
In the official communities, various contests are held, and there is an opportunity to receive gifts in honor of holidays and much more. In other words, Lineage 2 Legacy continues to evolve as a modern game even today. It can become a true escape for those who enjoy MMORPGs.
