Hytale Mining Guide: Ores, Gems, and Crystals Explained

The recently released early access version of Hytale has already become a global hit. Its variety of mechanics, advanced crafting system, realistic physics, and vibrant effects draw you in from the very first minutes. In this guide, we’ll explain where to find ores, gems, and crystals. You’ll learn how resources generate and which biomes they appear in.

Ore appears as clusters embedded in rock. There are several types of pickaxes in the game, but you can actually break ore blocks even with your bare hands. The difference is that a good pickaxe breaks a block in one to three hits, while doing it by hand can take a minute or longer.

It doesn’t matter what tool you use—breaking a block will always give you one piece of ore and some stone. Each inventory slot can hold up to 25 pieces of ore.

Ore always appears within stone, sometimes in groups of four blocks or more. It’s impossible to predict exactly where deposits will be, since everything depends on world generation. Sometimes, even in places where you’d expect to find ore, there’s nothing—and that’s normal.

The world is divided into four zones: Plains, Desert, Permafrost, and Volcanoes. Each zone has its own set of biomes, as well as underground areas with unique locations deep below the surface. Certain types of ore spawn only in specific regions.

You’ll often find resources while exploring the world. Most structures contain chests, which often have ore, ingots, tools, weapons, or armor inside. Don’t forget that you can also craft a Salvager’s Workbench at a level 2 workbench. This machine lets you break down equipment into raw materials. For example, an adamantite pickaxe can be dismantled into two pieces of ore and a red scrap.

Copper ore looks like rectangular clusters of orange crystals. You can find it in the starting biome and all other zones except volcanoes. The largest concentrations of copper are found in the desert.

This resource appears as large rectangular stone blocks. It has a distinct steel-gray color with lots of rusty spots. You’ll first find it in the deep underground of the starting zone. Most commonly, it’s found in permafrost areas, also widespread in the wastelands, and less often in volcanoes.

Green ore veins embedded in stone. You’ll first find them in the desert biome, which is also where most of the deposits are. Thorium is extremely rare in permafrost and volcanic regions.

A dark blue ore with a distinctive sheen. It’s very shiny, but easy to overlook in the dark. Cobalt spawns in the desert, is common in the volcanic region, and is also frequently found in permafrost.

This ore has a rich red color. It only appears in the volcanic zone. In high mountains, you can find large amounts of adamantite.

These veins are light silver with purple spots. Silver deposits are easy to confuse with iron. It’s one of the rarest resources. Silver can be found in all regions, but most often spawns deep underground in permafrost, where you’ll have to dig deep and stay a while to find it.

Gold ore has a characteristic yellow, slightly dull color, but still stands out among other resources. Like silver, it’s found in all biomes except the plains. Most often, gold appears high in the mountains and in permafrost, and it’s also relatively common in volcanoes.

You’ll need to craft a Furnace at your workbench. You can use wood, sticks, grass, or resin as fuel. Burnable materials turn into a more efficient fuel—charcoal. With upgrades, the furnace can hold three ore slots and four output slots.

To get ingots, follow these steps:

The fuel consumption for smelting is about 2:1. For every two units of fuel burned, you’ll get one piece of charcoal in the right window. With a full load, you’ll end up with three slots of ingots and one slot of charcoal. Place your furnace somewhere visible so you can easily keep track of its operation.

There are five types of crystals in the game:

In most cases, you can find them in all regions (except volcanic) only underground, and usually by chance. They spawn as clusters of six glowing blocks around the gem. Sometimes the surrounding rock is exposed and you can spot the deposit from afar, but more often you’ll have to search blindly.

There are volcanoes in the Deadlands. Some of them contain treasure: gold blocks with a ruby, a sapphire, and two chests with top-tier loot. This spot will be marked on your map. Inside the crater, you’ll see yellow pixels, and sometimes blue and red clusters.
