In any game where crafting and survival are important, the workbench plays a huge role. No matter the setting, it always serves the same purpose and is often one of the first things a player builds. Hytale is no exception. In this guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know about workbenches in Hytale: how and why to upgrade them, and what new options they unlock.
How Workbenches Function in Hytale
While the workbench gives you familiar access to crafting, Hytale puts its own spin on things. Instead of just upgrading a single crafting table (though you can do that too), the main idea is to create new tables for specific recipe categories. In other words, early on you’ll craft a basic workbench for all your needs, but as you progress, crafting branches out into specialized tables.
There are a total of 8 different tables and workbenches in the game, plus 4 extra devices that are also used for crafting. These extra devices aren’t for entire categories, but for specific types of recipes.
How to Make Workbenches
To make your first workbench, all you need is a basic axe and pickaxe. You can craft these right away, since your new character already has some basic knowledge. Use the axe to chop down 4 pieces of wood, and the pickaxe to gather 3 stones, that’s enough to get started.
When you open the crafting menu, you’ll see four tabs: Survival, Tools, Crafting, and Inventions. There’s a wide range of recipes available, but this is just your foundation for future progress.
The main thing is that the Crafting section unlocks access to new tables:
- Armorer’s Workbench — armor. Requires 2 copper ingots, 5 stones, 10 wood.
- Builder’s Workbench — building parts. Requires 3 stones, 6 wood.
- Farmer’s Workbench — everything for food and farming. Requires 6 wood, 20 plant fiber.
- Alchemist’s Table — various potions. Requires 5 gold ingots, 10 bone shards, 10 poison glands, 20 stones.
- Furniture Workbench — furniture and decorative items. Requires 4 stones, 6 wood.
- Mage’s Table — magical items and teleporters. Requires 10 thorium ingots, 20 void essences, 30 linen scraps.
- Scrapper’s Workbench — dismantling items. Requires 5 wood, 5 stones, 6 iron ingots.
You can also upgrade the basic workbench to level 2, it takes 30 copper ingots, 20 iron ingots, and 20 linen scraps.
There are also special devices, which we mentioned earlier, designed for specific item types:
- Blacksmith’s Anvil — for upgrading and repairing weapons. Requires 2 copper ingots, 5 stones, 10 wood.
- Cooking Stove — for preparing food and improving its quality. Requires 2 copper ingots, 5 stones, 10 wood.
- Furnace — for smelting ore into ingots. Requires 6 wood, 6 stones.
- Tanning Rack — for turning animal hides into leather. Requires 3 stones, 3 light hides, 6 wood.
What Each Workbench Does
Armorer’s Workbench
Enemies in Hytale are tough and can take you out in just a couple of hits. To survive and safely explore the world, you’ll need armor. At this workbench, you craft protection for the four main body parts:
- Head
- Chest
- Arms
- Legs
Upgrading this workbench unlocks more advanced armor, so improving it is crucial.
Builder’s Workbench
This one is straightforward. Use materials to craft walls or roofs, and later on, more complex structures. It’s all about construction components. No upgrades needed, you get access to all recipes of this type right away.
Farmer’s Workbench
Early on, this workbench helps you learn how to till soil and plant basic seeds. It’s much easier and safer than foraging for supplies in the wild. As you progress, you’ll unlock the ability to build an animal farm and start breeding livestock.
Alchemist’s Table
Alchemy gear lets you craft healing potions, which are especially useful in tough battles (and you’ll face plenty). Over time, you’ll unlock more advanced brews and concoctions.
Furniture Workbench
Mainly used for making decorative items. The furniture itself doesn’t provide any useful effects, so these recipes are only handy if you’ve built everything else and want to freshen up your base’s look. You can easily do without them.
Mage’s Table
Magic items give buffs, but the real highlight is teleporters, which let you travel quickly over long distances.
Blacksmith’s Anvil
Another extremely useful workbench, since this is where you’ll make weapons. The better the anvil, the deadlier your weapon. It’s important to use it in synergy with the Armorer’s Workbench to keep the game balanced. After all, what’s the point of being able to take a lot of hits if you can’t actually defeat a powerful enemy?
Cooking Stove
Food restores health, but unlike potions, it doesn’t work instantly. If you’re heading out on a long journey, be sure to pack a variety of meals so you can recover in peace whenever you get the chance.
Furnace
This is the essential device for smelting ore into ingots. As you progress, you’ll discover more valuable materials, which you’ll need to turn into rarer ingots. There aren’t that many metals in the game:
- Copper
- Iron
- Thorium
- Cobalt
- Adamantite
- Mythril
Tanning Rack
Whether you’re raising animals or hunting wild creatures, you’ll be collecting hides from them. On their own, hides aren’t very useful, but different types of leather are required for many recipes. The tanning rack lets you process hides into leather. Naturally, you’ll need to upgrade the rack to unlock rarer types of leather.
