In How to Fish, progressing from one island to the next isn't just about defeating bosses. You'll also need to complete quests for local NPCs. On the third island, Desert, the Tourist asks you to bring him an endangered fish, but the game doesn't tell you exactly which species will count. In this guide, we'll explain where to find an endangered fish, which lure to use, which species work for the quest, and why completing it is required for further progression.
How to Complete the Endangered Fish Quest in How to Fish
This quest becomes available on the third island, Desert. Find the Tourist sitting under a palm tree on the far side of the island. He's easy to recognize by his swim ring and hat.
Talk to him and he'll ask you to catch an endangered species, but he won't name a specific fish.
Which Fish Count as Endangered
You don't need to catch one specific species. The Tourist will accept any suitable fish whose information panel lists it as an Endangered Species.
Confirmed options include:
- Needlefish.
- Bowlfish.
- Seahorse.
There's no need to hunt for one particular species. Simply catch the first eligible fish you find.
How to Catch an Endangered Fish
Go to the shop on the Desert and buy the Standard Lure. This is the lure used to catch the species needed for the quest.
Equip the Standard Lure on your Fishing Rod and fish around the island as usual. Endangered fish don't have a separate spawn location, so there's no need to search for a hidden pond, a particular stretch of coastline, or any other special fishing spot.
What to Do with the Endangered Fish
Once you've caught a suitable creature, return to the Tourist and give it to him.
If the fish meets the quest requirements, he'll accept it and reward you with the Carrot. This isn't regular food, but a unique story bait, so don't throw it away.
What Is the Carrot For
The Carrot is used to summon the Pufferfish, the main story boss of the Desert.
Equip it as bait and cast your Fishing Rod into the water. You'll then reel in the boss and begin the fight.
After defeating the Pufferfish, pick up the Pufferfish Fin and take it back to the Tourist. In return, he'll add the coordinates of the next island, Rocks, to your Radar.
