Valheim Bed Guide: How to Set and Change Your Spawn Point
Valheim is a survival game where you'll face plenty of dangers during your adventures. That's why it's important to know how to set a spawn point when building a base, so if something goes wrong, you'll respawn at your shelter instead of back at the starting area. In this guide, we'll explain all the requirements for setting your spawn point at your camp.
How to Craft the Tools You Need and Set Up a Spawn Point
At the beginning of the game, you won't have any tools for building a shelter or defenses, so your first task is to gather enough resources to craft the basic equipment needed to set up a camp. After spawning at the Sacrificial Stones, talk to Hugin and pick up nearby branches and stones. This will unlock your first crafting recipes, including the Stone Axe, Club, Hammer, and Torch. More items and structures will gradually become available as you collect new materials and build crafting stations.
Explore the surrounding area and collect branches and stones lying on the ground. You can also get Wood from small trees and bushes that can be broken without tools. It's worth collecting everything you find until you have enough resources to craft a Hammer and Stone Axe. Once you've made these tools, you'll gain access to your first building pieces. The Stone Axe can be used to chop down larger trees, allowing you to gather plenty of Wood in a short amount of time. Collect a few dozen pieces of Wood and craft the tools you need.
To craft a Hammer, you'll need:
- Wood (3).
- Stone (2).
To craft a Stone Axe, you'll need:
- Wood (5).
- Stone (4).
Once you've crafted your first tools, you'll be able to build a Campfire and Workbench. The Campfire will keep your character warm in cold weather, provide the Warm effect, and is required for sleeping, while the Workbench unlocks additional items and building pieces.
To build a Campfire, you'll need:
- Wood (2).
- Stone (5).
To build a Workbench, you'll need:
- Wood (10).
A Workbench can be placed outdoors, but it needs a roof and sufficient shelter before you can fully use it for crafting and repairs. Build your first house on relatively flat ground near the Campfire. If necessary, craft a Hoe at the Workbench and use it to level the terrain.
To craft a Hoe, you'll need:
- Wood (5).
- Stone (2).
How to Set a Spawn Point
Now use any available wooden building pieces, including floors, walls, roof sections, doors, and other components, to build a shelter on level ground. You don't need to move the Workbench inside the house. The Bed only needs to be within its building radius. Open the Furniture tab and select the Bed. Place it inside your shelter. The Bed will serve as your character's spawn point.
To build a Bed, you'll need:
- Wood (8).
- A Workbench must be placed nearby.
To claim a Bed as your spawn point, it must be under a roof and inside a sufficiently sheltered area. Approach the Bed and interact with it. A message will appear confirming that your new spawn point has been set. You don't need a Campfire simply to claim the Bed, but you will need a nearby fire source if you want to sleep and skip the night.
From this point on, if your character dies, you'll respawn at your house instead of the starting location near the Sacrificial Stones. All of your items will remain inside a gravestone at the place where you died, so you'll need to return there to recover your equipment.
If you build another Bed and claim it as your new spawn point, the previous one will no longer be used. This is especially useful during long journeys, as you can build small temporary camps and move your respawn point closer to the area you're currently exploring.
