Herm is one of the first merchants you meet in Graveyard Keeper 2. His quests revolve around farming, fishing, and gradually expanding the inventory of his store in the Village. In this guide, we'll explain how to complete every one of Herm's requests, grow Wheat, get the Basic Rod, catch the required fish, and make Lace.
Where to Find Herm
You first need Herm after completing What the Fairy?. Head to the Village, where the merchant runs his own store. His first quest is called Supply and Demand. Keep in mind that Herm may move to a different location as the story progresses.
At first, Herm's inventory is very limited. He sells Wheat seed and Bronze Scrap. Completing his later quests raises the store tier and unlocks additional goods.
Supply and Demand
Supply and Demand is Herm's first and easiest request. It becomes available after What the Fairy?. You do not need to craft or deliver anything. Simply visit his store in the Village and talk to him.
After meeting Herm, several connected quests unlock at once. Herm gives you Planted and Delivered and The Quiet Art, while Jeffry's Two Peas in a Pod also becomes available. You need to complete the latter to continue Herm's fishing quest because that is where you receive the Basic Rod.
That is why it is best to start working on both the Garden and the twins' quest immediately after meeting the merchant. While the Wheat is growing, you can complete Two Peas in a Pod and get ready for fishing.
Planted and Delivered: How to Grow Wheat
The Planted and Delivered quest journal tells you to buy 16-20 Wheat seed from Herm and grow the crop in your Garden. However, to complete the quest, you need to hand over 5 Wheat, not the seeds.
Open Herm's trade menu and buy Wheat seed. The journal recommends purchasing 16-20 seeds, but you do not have to follow that number exactly. Each planting uses four seeds, while the quest only requires five Wheat. If one harvest is not enough, simply plant another batch.
Then return to the Garden. To grow crops, you need the Gardening technology from the Farming branch. It costs 5 green Tech Points and unlocks the Garden Bed. You do not need to repair the bridge to the Vineyard to grow Wheat because it grows in regular Garden Beds.
After researching Gardening, place a Garden Bed in the Garden. It does not require any construction materials, but you still need to prepare the plot with a shovel. To do this, your Farming mastery must be at least 2.
The amount of Wheat and Wheat seed returned by a harvest can vary, so rely on what you actually receive. If you end up with fewer than five Wheat, plant another batch.
Do not rush to sell the Wheat you harvest. You need to have all five units in your inventory to turn in the quest. Once you have enough, return to Herm and choose Give free samples. Herm takes the Wheat and the quest is completed.
As a reward, you receive 1 Town Gratitude, 1 bronze-quality Story, Farmer's Clothes, and the Vegetable dishes technology. Your Village reputation also increases by 5, and Herm's Store advances to tier 2.
The merchant's inventory expands considerably. He begins selling Chicken Egg, River fish fillet, Carrot seed, Beet Seed, Cabbage seed, Onion seed, Flax Seed, Hop Seeds, Wheat, and various vegetables. For that reason, it is worth completing Planted and Delivered as early as possible.
How to Reach Farming Mastery 2
Tech Points are used to unlock technologies, but they do not directly increase the Keeper's Masteries. We explained the difference between these systems and how to earn the necessary points in our guide on how progression works in Graveyard Keeper 2. This means that researching Gardening for 5 green Tech Points does not automatically increase your Farming mastery.
The Rusty Shovel provides +1 Farming mastery while it is equipped on your tool belt. You can get another point from the talent tree or from the Basic Rod, which also provides +1 Farming mastery while it is on your toolbar. If you do not have the Basic Rod yet, gather Mushrooms and Berries until you complete the Mushroom Hunter I and Berry Seeker I Inspirations, then claim the rewards in the Inspirations menu. The first rewards do not require Faith and together provide enough experience to earn your first talent point in the Farming tree.
Spend it on the Farming mastery +1 node. Together with the bonus from the Rusty Shovel, this brings your Farming mastery to 2 and allows you to prepare the Garden Bed.
If you are also working on the twins' quest and gathering Clay at the same time, keep in mind that this job also uses a shovel, but the game checks Building mastery rather than Farming mastery.
How to Get the Basic Rod
You need the Basic Rod for Herm's next quest, The Quiet Art. The first stage of the quest sends you directly to the twins, so you need to complete their request first.
After completing Supply and Demand, head to Jeffry and start Two Peas in a Pod. During the quest, you need to find the twins, resolve their argument, and then bring them 6 Clay Plates.
After handing over the plates, you receive the Basic Rod and 1 Town Gratitude. You can also craft the Basic Rod yourself at Woodworking Workbench I after researching Fishing I. The recipe requires 3 Sticks, 2 Bronze Details, 2 Flax Thread, and Building mastery 3. However, to complete the first stage of The Quiet Art, you specifically need to finish Two Peas in a Pod because the quest requires you to get the rod from the twins.
The Quiet Art: How to Catch a Roach and a Gudgeon
The Quiet Art unlocks after Supply and Demand, but its first stage sends you to the twins for the fishing rod. Once Two Peas in a Pod is complete, the next objective appears: catch fish for Herm.
The merchant needs 1 Roach and 1 Gudgeon. You must have both fish in your inventory when turning in the quest. Suitable fishing spots can be found to the left of your house at the Inquisition Base and beside the road leading to the Village.
Equip the Basic Rod and keep fishing until you catch both required species. Bringing Herm any other river fish will not help because the quest specifically checks for a Roach and a Gudgeon.
Then return to his store and choose Give fish. Herm takes one of each fish. Completing The Quiet Art rewards you with 2 Town Gratitude, 1 bronze-quality Story, and the River fish dishes technology.
If the required dialogue option does not appear, check your inventory first. You need to have both fish at the same time to complete the quest. Also make sure that you have finished Two Peas in a Pod and completed the previous stage of The Quiet Art.
The Frill of the Chase: Where to Get Lace
The last of Herm's four quests is called The Frill of the Chase. The merchant asks you to bring him 1 Lace.
You can craft Lace yourself at the Sewing Table. The recipe requires 8 Flax Thread, and crafting it requires Building mastery 5. The recipe itself is unlocked by the Sewing Basics technology.
If you want to make the item yourself, develop the Farming branch. The production chain requires Flax, the Flax Thread technology, and a Spinning Wheel, followed later by Sewing Basics and the Sewing Table.
Flax Thread is made at the Spinning Wheel: 4 Flax produces 4 Flax Thread. This means you need 8 Flax and two production cycles to make enough thread for one Lace. Then head to the Sewing Table and craft the Lace.
You do not necessarily have to craft it yourself. Lace can also be purchased from the Trademaster or the Tailor. If those merchants are already available, buying it may be much faster than setting up the entire production chain just for this quest.
Once you have the Lace, return to Herm and hand it over to complete The Frill of the Chase.
The main reward is tier 3 for Herm's Store. After the upgrade, the merchant begins selling Jug of Milk, Grape Seeds, Apple Tree Seedling, Bush Seedling, Rhododendron Seedling, Blueberry Seedling, and Flax Thread.
What You Get for Completing All of Herm's Quests
The main value of these quests is how they develop your farming setup and expand the options available to you. Planted and Delivered upgrades Herm's Store to tier 2, unlocks Vegetable dishes, and rewards you with 1 bronze-quality Story, Farmer's Clothes, 1 Town Gratitude, and 5 Village reputation.
The Quiet Art rewards you with 2 Town Gratitude, 1 bronze-quality Story, and unlocks River fish dishes. The Frill of the Chase upgrades Herm's Store to tier 3 and adds rarer farming supplies to his inventory.
For that reason, Herm's quests are worth completing rather than skipping. They do not involve difficult combat, but they gradually introduce farming and fishing, unlock new recipes, and expand the inventory of one of Graveyard Keeper 2's most useful early-game merchants.
