Now the first coherent explanation of what happened to it has emerged: according to journalist Alex Donaldson, who's covered Japanese RPGs for years, the remake really was in development, reached a very advanced stage, and was then frozen. -

Naoki Hamaguchi says Final Fantasy VII Revelation is still being planned for release, and Square Enix has not yet settled on what kind of boxed edition the game will get when it launches in early 2027.
Hamaguchi said he is still working on the SKU lineup for the game and would like to make arrangements for "some kind of physical edition." At the same time, he noted that the industry is moving away from physical games and toward downloadable releases, which is why the final format for Revelation remains undecided. -

At the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest in Berlin, Naoki Yoshida argued during a panel with Naoki Hamaguchi that some older Final Fantasy games are simply too large to fit neatly into a trilogy.
