Will Gears of War: E-Day take the series back to the beginning of the catastrophe?
The Coalition has announced that Gears of War: E-Day will mark the series' return to the very moment where it all began. The studio reminded fans that the original Gears of War launched in 2006 and immediately reshaped the genre, and the new project is designed to pay tribute to the past, celebrate the series' journey alongside its fans, and lay the foundation for its next chapter.
For this, the developers chose E-Day — the day when the Locust invasion began in the world of Gears. The studio calls it a point of irreversible loss that sits at the very heart of this universe. According to the team, this story best captures the key elements of Gears: brotherhood, brutality, dark beauty, and grand spectacular scale.
E-Day takes place before the first Gears of War. After decades of conflict on Sera, peace was finally declared and soldiers returned home — but it is precisely at this moment that the Locust invasion begins, changing everything.
At the center of the story are a young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, who are trying to adjust to civilian life while grieving the death of Carlos Santiago — Dom's older brother and Marcus's best friend. The developers emphasize that E-Day will tell two origin stories simultaneously: the beginning of the fall of the Gears world, and the beginning of a brotherhood forged in the midst of catastrophe. The main events will unfold across three intense days.
The campaign is focused on a single city, to show how war affects ordinary life. The city is conceived not merely as a backdrop but as a full narrative element, with its own districts, history, and visual character. The studio describes it as a place where there were jobs, sporting events, and hope for a peaceful life just recently — and where the streets are now torn open by sinkholes, people are abandoning their cars, and scrambling to take shelter in subway stations and storefronts.
New Scale and Reworked Combat
E-Day was developed on Unreal Engine 5, and the studio is explicit that the game was built from scratch. Characters, enemies, weapons, animation, sound, and the world itself have all been rebuilt. The Coalition is promising the most dense and detailed world in the series' history, large seamless locations, fully dynamic ray-traced lighting, and richer real-time destruction.
Particular attention has been paid to movement. The developers preserved the sense of weight that comes with soldiers in heavy armor, but reworked the cover and movement system to make it smoother. Characters can now slide, break into cover faster, jump, climb higher, and use the city's verticality for flanking routes and new tactical options.
The studio emphasizes that the foundation of combat remains the same: a mix of enemy types, weapon choices, and the ability to read an arena. At the same time, players now have more approaches to any situation. In open districts, you can push forward head-on, flank the enemy, or occupy superior elevated positions. In co-op, different members of the squad can do all of this simultaneously.
Locust, Weapons, and a Horror Element
E-Day will bring back E-Holes — sinkholes from which the Locust can emerge directly from underground. They can once again be sealed with grenades. In addition, the game will feature large-scale craters that swallow cars and entire buildings. The developers have also announced destructible cover made from different materials that will gradually break apart under fire.
Which new weapon would you like to try out first?
The Locust themselves have become more aggressive and more terrifying. The studio specifically highlights Juvies, Boomers, Wretches, and Reavers, promising to make familiar enemies more dangerous and more expressive than ever. According to the team, E-Day does not turn into a horror game, but the world's atmosphere will feel significantly more unsettling.
The damage and dismemberment system has also been reworked. The developers speak of localized damage, tissue deformation, and more detailed physical reactions to hits. Returning weapons include the Gnasher, the Longshot, and the Lancer, while new additions include the Gorger Puncher — a grenade launcher with a controllable detonation moment — and the Incinerator shotgun. The origin of the Chainsaw Lancer will become a dedicated part of the story: E-Day will show how the iconic weapon came to exist within the series' lore.
Characters, Sound, and Modes
The campaign will be experienced through the perspective of a new squad, Bravo. Alongside Marcus and Dom, the roster includes Mack Carter — a former Gear working in Imulsion reclamation — and Lucas Raine, a young communications officer who dreamed of front-line service. Familiar characters will also appear throughout the story, including Tai Kaliso and pilot Gil Grera.
The Coalition specifically noted that they worked to preserve the recognizable look of the key heroes without sacrificing it in the name of excessive realism. At the same time, the facial animation technology has been substantially upgraded: the developers speak of a more complex system, a greater number of joints, and hundreds of facial shapes for each character, allowing emotions to be conveyed with greater precision.
What do you think of the idea of focusing the campaign on a single city and packing the events into three intense days?
Sound will play a major role in E-Day. The musical structure will preserve Gears' signature tension build and the sharp release after combat, but the soundtrack will be harder and more anxious in tone. The studio specifically mentioned that the sound of the original chainsaw used in the series was recreated from scratch for the Lancer prototype, and that the ambient acoustic system will change how scenes are perceived depending on whether the player is on a street, in an alley, or in an open space.
