Gothic 1 Remake is a high-quality remaster of the original 2001 game. This isn't a simple remaster with improved textures, but a fully-fledged new project with reworked mechanics and modern graphics. At the same time, it retains the atmosphere and gameplay of the original Gothic. Its world is harsh, but attractive in its own way. We covered the game in more detail in our Gothic 1 Remake review.

Graphics and Optimization Mods

What are your impressions of Gothic 1 Remake?
Graphics enhancements with ReShade technology
The changes are minor – the brightness of sunlight has been reduced, the contrast between light and shadow has been softened, and a subtle color balance has been refined. But the overall picture looks much better. The original art style is preserved, without bloom, inappropriate HDR, or other effects. However, please note that the game's system requirements may increase.
Installation Instructions:
- Download ReShade.
- Run ReShade_Setup.exe.
- Find Gothic 1 Remake in the list of games. Under "Select filters to install," click "Uncheck all," and then click "Check all" again.
- Find the location of ReShade in the game files (...\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Gothic 1 Remake\G1R\Binaries\Win64).
- Place the downloaded GothicCleanedUp.ini file in this folder.
- Launch the game, press the Home key, then Skip Tutorial.
- At the top, you should see "ReShadePreset." Click on this line and select GothicCleanedUp.ini from the list.
Increasing FPS
This mod doesn't change the image, but significantly improves game performance through hidden system optimizations. Specifically, it eliminates stuttering, reduces CPU load during large-scale brawls, regularly clears the cache of unused resources, and much more.
Installation Instructions:
- Run the Gothic remake at least once.
- Press Win + R, type %LocalAppData%, and press Enter.
- Open the \G1R\Saved\Config\Windows\ folder and find the Engine.ini file.
- Replace its contents with the mod's configuration (the default option is VanillaGraphics) and save the file.
- Right-click the new Engine.ini file, select "Properties", check "Read-only," and select "Apply."
- Launch the game.
If this isn't enough, use a mod that removes dynamic shadows, ray tracing, and Nanite technology.
Installation instructions:
- Download and unzip the mod archive.
- Copy engine.ini to the folder: %localappdata%\G1R\Saved\Config\Windows\ or replace the contents of this file, if it already exists, with the new text.
- Launch the game.
Mods for Interface, Controls, and Usability
The original Gothic had a very awkward interface for modern players. The remake is better, but still far from flawless. Mods allow you to smooth out some of the rough edges and customize the controls to your taste.
Compact Interface
Reduces the size of the health and mana bars and moves the quick access bar lower than in the original. This will make it easier to monitor your hero's key stats during combat.
Smooth Camera
In the Gothic Remake, the camera noticeably jerks when moving over rough terrain or climbing stairs. However, you can fix this issue with a mod. After installing it, all camera movements will be as smooth as possible.
Installation instructions:
- Launch the Gothic Remake at least once.
- Press Win + R, type %LocalAppData%, and press Enter.
- Open the \G1R\Saved\Config\Windows\ folder and find the Engine.ini file.
- Replace its contents with the configuration from the mod and save the file.
- Right-click the new Engine.ini file, select "Properties," check "Read-only," and select "Apply."
- Launch the game.
Improved Quick Access Bar
Keeps the quick access bar on screen when you open your inventory. This feature significantly simplifies managing equipment and consumables.
This mod allows you to see the quick access panel throughout the entire game.
Displaying the transaction price
After installing this mod, you will be shown the actual price of items when buying and selling. Moreover, profitable deals are highlighted in green, while unprofitable ones are highlighted in red. This makes it easy to find sellers with the most interesting offers.
Running at the touch of a button
A simple but useful mod that allows you to activate sprinting with a single keystroke. In the original game, you need to hold it down.
Highlighting Dropped Items
After installing this mod, you can highlight all newly dropped items by pressing F4. This is convenient for those who prefer to take all valuables from the battlefield and don't want to miss anything.
Improved Compass
Adds a horizontal compass with a static center and a convenient display of character movement. It is located at the top of the screen. This will make it easier to navigate the game's open world.
Stealth Indicators
Displays icons on the screen that indicate the current state of an enemy or NPC. You can immediately tell whether they can see, hear, smell, or not notice you. This is handy when stealing and useful if you want to sneak past enemies.
To use the mod, you need to install the Shared Mod Menu.
Minimap
Adds a minimap with icons and a detailed map of the area to the upper left corner of the screen. The interface becomes more cluttered, but you might prefer this option.
To add or remove the minimap, press F12.
Please note: after installing the mod, open the Mods folder, find the mods.txt file, open it, and add the line "Minimap: 1" (without the quotation marks).
There's also a modification that makes the standard map more detailed and adds useful markers, including points of interest and key characters.
Ring menu for teleportation runes
This mod adds a convenient radial menu with all teleportation runes to the game. This will allow you to navigate the Valley of Mines more quickly. The visual style of the interface and icons is also worth noting; they perfectly match the style of the game.
To open the menu, press T.
Automatic item sorting during trading
A simple yet convenient mod that automatically sorts items into categories when you're about to buy or sell something. For example, identical consumables and duplicate weapons will be stored in the same slot. Finding the right gear will be much easier and faster.
Gameplay Mods
Of course, the mods in this section don't transform Gothic into a different genre. But they do introduce subtle changes to the basic gameplay that may prove useful during playthrough.
Ability to rest on benches and skip time
While in the original game and the remake, benches are merely decorative, after installing this mod you can sit on them and wait. This way, you can skip a couple of hours. However, to restore your health, you'll still need a full night's sleep in a bed.
Increasing Movement Speed
Many players find the mounted domesticated scavenger to be too slow. This modification allows you to manually adjust the speed. After installation, open the MountSpeed.ini file, find the line SpeedModifier=1.3, and enter a specific value. By default, it's set to 1.0 in the original game, with a maximum of 2.0.
Also check out the modification that allows you to loot while mounted.
A separate mod increases swimming speed.
This modification allows you to run faster on foot.
Instant loot collection and skipping lockpicking minigames
This mod adds the ability to instantly loot the bodies of defeated enemies, chests, and other storage areas. Additionally, all locks will be automatically picked.
Some players don't want to remove lockpicking completely, but they want to modify this minigame, for example, by introducing dynamic difficulty based on the value of the chest's contents. This mod was released especially for them.
Modifications can also make the lockpicking minigame easier for players who have mastered their thief skills.
Changing Spell Damage
A mod that mages will surely appreciate. It increases the effectiveness of destructive spells based on the player's maximum mana. For each point, you'll receive +1% to spell damage.
Collecting Arrows and Bolts from Defeated Enemies
This modification will be useful for those who rely on long-range weapons. It allows you to retrieve arrows and crossbow bolts from enemy corpses. This way, you can quickly replenish your ammunition and avoid running out at the most unexpected moment.
Re-spawning enemies
After installing this mod, groups of enemies will respawn, just like in the Dark Souls series. This feature works in the second and subsequent chapters. Thanks to it, you can level up your character faster, and the game world will not feel empty after clearing locations for the first time.
Fast Travel Without Limits
This modification allows you to freely travel anywhere on the map. You can also save points of interest that you plan to visit later. However, keep in mind that you may accidentally end up in an area with powerful enemies.
This modification requires the SharedModMenu utility.
Responsive Blocking
Allows you to instantly block. This solves the issue of two overlapping animations that occurs in the original game. Fighting with melee weapons will be easier, and the battles themselves will be much fairer.
Automatic Health and Mana Regeneration
Allows you to replenish your health and mana without using consumables. By default, the process is slow, but the regeneration speed can be adjusted.
Balance Mods
These modifications don't add anything new to the game, but they do allow you to change various parameters. Depending on the values you specify, the gameplay can become either easier or more difficult.
Customizing Weapon, Armor, and Healing Stats
With this mod, you can set specific weapon and spell damage values, armor protection, and the effectiveness of potions and food. Adjust these settings with caution, as drastic changes can lead to unpredictable consequences. You risk losing interest in the gameplay. If you're not afraid, experiment.
A separate mod is related to consumable parameters.
Another modification increases the amount of health food restores.
This mod also changes the bonuses from jewelry.
New Magic Balance
According to the mod's author, mages level up more slowly than warriors or archers, but at the same time
Their skills are less effective. With this modification, you can make destructive spells more powerful. Your hero will also cast them with increased speed. The range of area-of-effect magic and the parameters of healing spells have also been adjusted.
There's another similar mod that works similarly, but with its own unique features. For example, it reduces the cost of learning magical arts.
You can speed up the process of learning sorcery with this modification. It allows you to master new levels of magic by reading the corresponding books.
Increasing the amount of ore obtained
A simple but useful modification that allows you to get more ore for each action. This will make your progress easier and reduce the need for tedious grinding.
You can also use mods to instantly mine ore from veins.
This modification allows you to immediately move from one vein to another without delay.
Or you can make your veins have an infinite supply of ore.
Cosmetic Mods
These modifications don't change the gameplay, but they do introduce visual changes. They will not only allow you to customize the game to your liking but also surprise your friends who come to visit and want to try out the Gothic remake.
Playing as an NPC
Suggests changing the Nameless Hero's model to any other character in the game. To do this, simply press Ctrl+N.
Tattoo and short hair like the Swamp Camp novices
This mod will surely appeal to those who play for the Swamp Camp. It allows you to make the main character resemble the novices. However, the appearance doesn't impose any restrictions and allows you to go against those who worship the Sleeper.
Muscular Protagonist
Transforms the Nameless Hero into a true muscle man with pronounced muscles. An excellent choice for those who play the role of a warrior who emphasizes striking power.
Naked Girls
A modification that removes clothing from female characters in the game. The naked characters are Seraphia, Syra, Velaya, and the unnamed female convicts in the New Camp.
More Blood
If the original game isn't violent enough, install this modification. As a result, many hits will be accompanied by blood splatter, and the blood pools will be larger.
Grass Removal
This makes the game look closer to what we saw in the first Gothic. A good option for those who feel the remake has deviated significantly from the original.
Installation instructions:
- Download the mod file and unzip it.
- Copy engine.ini to the folder: %localappdata%\G1R\Saved\C
onfig\Windows. - Launch the game.
Fog Removal
This mod will primarily appeal to those who dislike the heavy fog in the Valley of Mines. It makes the image sharper. A nice bonus is the slight performance improvement in certain locations. However, it's worth noting that some areas, such as the swamps, will become less atmospheric.
Installation instructions:
- Press Win + R, type %LocalAppData%, and press Enter.
- Open the \G1R\Saved\Config\Windows\ folder and find the Engine.ini file.
- Replace its contents with the mod's configuration and save the file.
