Blade & Soul is a third-person MMORPG with martial arts set in eastern fantasy. Players can expect spectacular battles and seductive characters, a sea of content for leveling up in pairs or teams. The project is developed by the Korean studio NCsoft, and in Russia and the CIS countries, it is supported by the company "Innov". The game is distributed under a free-to-play model with the option to subscribe to premium services.
Unique gaming experience
The gameplay of Blade & Soul is built on an unusual scheme for MMORPGs — with a dominance of fighting and slasher elements, expressed through various combo attacks designed for both melee and ranged combat. The screen showcases action reminiscent of Devil May Cry 4 and Ninja Gaiden 3, with adjustments for large-scale multiplayer battles.
Four races and 11 classes allow you to create a character tailored to your preferred playstyle. Mastering numerous skills and techniques is quite simple due to the combat system that does not require aiming at enemies — to hit with weapons or launch magical attacks, you just need to turn in the right direction.
The game has a limit on the amount of experience gained per day, so character development can take a considerable amount of time. But there is a way to level up quickly.
As the character levels up, new abilities are unlocked, and various attributes increase. The points earned are invested in primary attributes, and through weapons, armor, and other gear, you can enhance specific parameters.
The unique gameplay is enhanced by the ability to redistribute points easily at any moment — this allows for correcting development mistakes and changing the combat style. Each character knows a dozen basic skills, and each of these skills has several secondary ones that modify the primary one.
Backstory of the game world
The game world is based on thoughtful eastern fantasy, combined with the myths and legends of the peoples of Southeast Asia, as well as eastern stylistics in the architecture of buildings and the surrounding environment.
According to mythology, the world of Blade & Soul is divided into four parts. The main action takes place in the Middle World, where humans and other races reside. There is also the bright Land of gods and deities, the "gray" Lands of the dead for spirits and ghosts, and the dark Lands of demons, the lair of evil.
Long ago, the land of Naryu stretched across the entire territory of the Middle Lands, and its inhabitants were happy and carefree. This did not please the archdemon Manhwan, who fed on the malice and hatred of people. Gathering a vast army and attacking Naryu, he desecrated the world of the living and their souls. Only the Guardians were able to stop his invasion and send him back to Hell.
Currently, Blade & Soul features two continents divided into locations, as well as a number of additional levels that can be accessed through portals. The levels in the game are spacious and diverse — cities and villages, fields and meadows, deserts and coastlines, dungeons with dangerous mobs and boss lairs.
The plot
The story of Blade & Soul unfolds many years after the invasion of Manhwan — a treacherous demon corrupted and endowed several Guardian students with incredible power to steal the Twilight Blade. This weapon can free the demon and restore his former might.
The created character immediately finds themselves at the center of events, as their mentor is none other than Hong Sokkyun, the great strongman and Guardian of the blade. After learning the basic techniques, the novice gets caught in a web: enemies betray and kill Hong, steal the Twilight Blade, and frame the character as one of the traitors.
Now they must not only clear their name and find the sinister weapon but also prove their worthiness, ability to wield the blade, and restore the balance of power. The plot is divided into 10 acts, each containing several dozen quests, totaling about 30 hours of gameplay.
Races and classes
The choice of race in Blade & Soul determines the character class, but this condition cannot be called strict. Each playable race can try their hand at 4-7 classes, with the class selection varying from race to race:
- Vans — strong and brave giants with unyielding willpower, but hot-tempered and arrogant;
- Shens — wise and resourceful, most similar to humans and the most versatile fighters;
- Fans — mysterious and extremely dangerous beings, resembling both amazons and elf-like creatures;
- Lins — nimble beings with cute ears, commanding the forces of nature, summoning, and spirits.
Classes differ in complexity, combat mechanics, and interface. Some may be difficult to manage due to the need to remember numerous combos and skills; some classes use mana, while others use combat spirit; the interface also changes accordingly. To find out which class to choose, read our guide.
Additionally, in Blade & Soul, there is no classic division into tank, damage dealer, and support — they are replaced by masters with their strengths and weaknesses, for example, a tank cannot withstand hits if they do not dodge and constantly block enemy attacks.
Here are the classes available in Blade & Soul:
- Shadow Master is perfectly balanced for close combat with deadly attacks. Easily approaches unnoticed; quickly retreats, laying traps everywhere, but has no armor;
- Blade Master uses a long sword for dynamic and spectacular positional battles, attacks, and defenses; capable of delivering swift and powerful strikes, as well as knowing magical tricks;
- Summoner Master summons a cat assistant to distract enemies from themselves, and finishes them off with powerful area magic, also capable of placing bombs. The simplest class in the game;
- Blade Master enhances his physical attacks with a sword by using area magic strikes in battle, can attack multiple opponents simultaneously, and is well-balanced in characteristics;
- Kung Fu Master is perfect for close combat duels. Uses lightning-fast kicks and punches, blocks, grabs, throws, and chokes. Constantly adapts stances and suitable attacks, making it the most challenging class in the game;
- Elemental Master is a classic mage, dealing area and target damage with fire, ice, or energy-draining techniques. Very dangerous but vulnerable;
- Spirit Master also uses magic but is not as strong, compensated by attack range, average defense, and support for allies. Can summon a demon from the Lands of the Dead to unleash on enemies;
- Qi Master heals and resurrects allies, fights in close combat with kung fu techniques, and uses magic at range; easily dodges attacks and blocks strikes; disappears right under the opponent's nose;
- Axe Master relies on physical strength, absorbs incoming damage, attacks multiple targets at once, and will be a fearsome opponent in close combat;
- Wrath Master uses a large two-handed sword in battles, allowing control over enemies in close combat, and also strengthens allies around him;
- Shooting Master uses magical weapons, is swift in battle, and can even attack enemies from above; at the same time, he is easy to master and can reset skill cooldowns for the group.
Player versus Environment modes:
- Completing numerous dungeons in a balanced team of 4-6 friends for gold, experience, and better gear;
- Raids — challenges for 6-12 experienced players in special locations where powerful and deadly monsters are supported by an army of minions;
- Side quests and events that develop character professions (blacksmith, priest, jeweler), completing new combat tasks from in-game factions, daily and weekly tasks;
- “Endless Tower” — a challenge for the most experienced players, where you need to pass 100 floors of the tower, and on each floor the opponents become more dangerous and stronger, while the reward increases.
Player versus Player modes:
- You can unite in Alliances (Moorim alliance and Hunchon cult) and numerous Combat Schools, with their daily tasks for the player community;
- Global PvP to promote your Alliance or Combat School in duels and team battles with other players;
- Event “Valley of Hurricanes” — 2 teams of 6 players participate, you need to capture 3 key points and hold them as long as possible. Matches last 15 minutes, points are awarded for kills and capturing points;
- Event “Lake of Jasper Whales” — 2 teams of 6 players participate, you need to set up 3 horns at the base, which appear in a random location on the map. One player carries the cargo, while the others protect him. Matches last 15 minutes;
- Esports arena with its champions and seasons, and a couple of competitive modes: 1 on 1 and 3 on 3, designed for experienced players.

I played Blade & Soul mainly for the combat. The system is unusual for an MMORPG: lots of combos, active controls, and skill really matters, especially in PvP. It won't suit everyone, but if you enjoy dynamic combat and control, it might be worth it. Visually, the game looks good, with an emphasis on Asian style. The story is interesting at first, but then becomes more typical. Overall, the game has its pros and cons, but the combat definitely sets it apart from other MMOs.
I used to play WoW a lot, but it always felt like there wasn't enough room to create a truly beautiful character. BnS solves that problem, and the customization is absolutely fantastic—you can create a hero just the way you want. Plus, it's great that there's an official publisher and a Russian translation—everything is clear and easy to understand. The combat is non-targeted, and compared to WoW, it feels much more alive. Yes, the game is old, but the art still looks stylish, and the world with its Asian aesthetics is something I personally find compelling. Online is also available, and parties are easy to form.
I've been playing BnS for a while now, and the visuals are what really grab me. Not in the technical sense, but the style and atmosphere. The designers really did a great job here: each region feels unique. You're running through blooming forests, then finding yourself in deserted ruins, then in gloomy swamps. And the character costumes are also impressive. Most of the outfits are actually earned in-game: from dungeons, chests after bosses, and quests. You can constantly change your character's appearance, and it never gets boring. For those who, like me, appreciate atmosphere and visuals, BnS will definitely be a hit. The loot system after dungeons is also enjoyable; you can get some interesting gear.
Personally, I initially joined BnS for the PvP; I like that skill really matters there. But then I realized there are many interesting modes beyond PvP. Sometimes I want to try out massive faction battles, which are more about teamwork and tactics. 3v3 and 6v6 team arenas are also great; they offer a completely different dynamic. To be honest, gear is more difficult in the open world, and it's tough for a newbie, especially against more experienced players. But overall, I'm glad there's plenty to choose from.
