Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) is a popular competitive team-based first-person shooter. The main ideology revolves around the confrontation between two teams, namely terrorists against counter-terrorists. At the beginning of each round, you will need to choose one of the opposing sides and complete the map's objective or eliminate all opponents. By completing objectives or defeating enemies, you earn money that can be spent on purchasing weapons, ammunition, or gear.
Genre and Gameplay
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is a multiplayer, competitive, team-based first-person shooter, a reincarnation of Counter-Strike: Source on an improved Valve engine. Released for PC, Mac, PS3, and Xbox 360 in 2012, it is most popular on PC, where it receives regular updates and hosts esports tournaments.
The developers did not change the gameplay formula that has worked for years but improved the networking aspect, match organization system, equipment selection before rounds, visual components, added new maps, and enhanced old ones. Global and regional leaderboards have been introduced.
Graphics and Maps
The main changes concerned the graphics: Global Offensive looks much more modern compared to Source. High-quality weapon and character models have appeared, the lighting and shadow systems have been improved, effect quality has been enhanced, the physics model has been refined, and the sound matches the acoustic conditions.
Traditional maps have been thoroughly redesigned with new textures and numerous new details; for example, wooden doors now feature metal frames that complicate shooting through them, and the length and width of overpasses and rooms have been altered, along with the addition of new passages.
There are 18 official and well-balanced maps in Global Offensive, but the community has created nearly 30,000 additional ones. The map that teams will play on depends on the mode, with 12 maps included in the "Bomb Defusal" mode and 4 in the "Hostage Rescue" mode.
Maps are divided into three groups: "competitive" (for tournaments), "reserve" (all other official maps, considered less balanced), and "operations," where community missions took place, and maps were selected from unofficial ones made by modders and developers.
Factions
The war in Global Offensive continues between two factions — terrorists from America, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and special forces from the USA, Britain, Germany, France, and Israel. There are no specialized classes; players are free to choose the weapons and gear that best suit their play style, with differences defined only by the appearance of the model and its sound.
Weapons and gear are unique to each group but may overlap in effect. The arsenal is divided into 5 slots. The first is occupied by primary weapons (shotgun, submachine gun, rifle, machine gun), the second by pistols, the third by knives; the fourth slot is for grenades of various types. The fifth slot is used by terrorists for the bomb in the corresponding modes.
Gameplay
The gameplay formula hasn't changed - you need to choose one of the opposing sides and complete the map's objective or eliminate all opponents. Teams consist of 5 players. Money is earned for killing enemies or completing objectives, which can be spent on purchasing new weapons, ammunition, body armor, or other gear. There is also a penalty system for friendly fire or killing hostages.
As before, victory or defeat depends on the player's skills, knowledge of maps, weapons, actions, and choosing the best tactics. Teamwork plays a more important role than ever. The low entry threshold ensures popularity, but in a team with experienced players, Global Offensive reveals itself in a completely different way.
Multiplayer
The winner in multiplayer is determined by the results of 10 or more rounds, as each is quite short. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive still relies on two main modes:
- “Bomb Defusal,” where terrorists must plant C4 at one of two sites, while the counter-terrorists must prevent this or defuse the bomb.
- “Hostage Rescue,” where the counter-terrorists need to rescue hostages, and the terrorists must prevent them from doing so, without killing the hostages.
New modes have also appeared, based on the most popular mods:
- In “Arms Race,” a new weapon is awarded for each kill during the round until the player gets a golden knife.
- “Demolition” combines “Bomb Defusal” and “Arms Race.” There is one bomb site on the map. There is no shop, and weapons are awarded for kills, in a specific order from round to round, getting better each time.
- “Deathmatch” changes the mechanics, as points are awarded for each kill, and the player with the most points wins.
- With the “Operations” update, a “Guardian” mode was introduced, in which a pair of counter-terrorists defend a point from a bomb plant. They face 5 terrorists per round, and the further the game goes, the stronger they become.
Esports Discipline
The Global Offensive community is closely tied to esports, with new teams forming from experienced enthusiasts who have excellent ratings in the game. You need to play constantly to earn or maintain ranks that determine the balance between newcomers and experienced players.
In professional tournaments and leagues, a so-called competitive mode is used, and the rules change for a clear determination of the winner.
Unlike the casual mode, competitive mode increases rewards for kills and the money limit, allowing for more purchases of grenades, with armor and helmets needing to be bought each round. Friendly fire cannot be turned off, making it harder to observe. Players vote for maps from three groups - “Frontline,” “Reserve,” and “Operations,” available by a certain methodology.
CS:GO championships are held annually, but only Valve decides who will organize the next tournament, with the prize pool for the finals being 1,000,000 dollars, but it can be increased. Smaller competitions also have a prize pool.
Team selection is conducted through minors — competitions for new teams from Asia, the CIS, Europe, and America. The teams selected from the minors meet at the majors, where they face off against each other and teams that have advanced to the playoffs of the previous championship. During the season, between 40 to 56 teams participate, with the top 16 qualifying for the finals.

Reviews and ratings
My acquaintance with the series began with CS 1.4, which I played on my cousin’s computer, and then I bought myself a disc with the game and played for a long time with bots, in a club with friends, then we played 1.6, later I got a fast Internet and then it was released CS: Source, in which I was a member until the release of CS:GO (I played it from beta). In other words, I have something to compare with.
CS:GO is a kind of extract from everything that Counter-Strike used to be, but dressed in the wrapper of a modern military shooter and seasoned with expanded competitive capabilities (now you can drag not only on one specific server, but also show everyone on the network what a high rank you have).
The graph was corrected, bringing the interior to reasonable detail, though it’s unclear wh… Read full
Read full
The most balanced eSports shooter, but the engine is already outdated and the anti-cheat is correspondingly lame. Graphics at the level of an eSports shooter and excellent movement mechanics
The best online shooter, and it's free too!
Many modes, mods, weapons.
The game is still popular today, but I don’t play it anymore. But as a child, that’s the only way I stuck to it.
Thank you, Valve!
Valve!
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is more of an expansion and improvement on the original game than anything new, but that doesn't make it any worse. First of all, for those who care about graphics and who, because of this, have not played the two previous versions before, this is a great reason to join this type of e-sports! Of course, it’s far from next-gen, but it doesn’t need it. The graphics don’t hurt the eyes, and that’s more than enough. And, accordingly, it has very reasonable system requirements and excellent optimization, so there is no need to complain. The main gameplay has not undergone major changes: several weapons, grenades, etc. have been added, but otherwise the game has been made much more interesting. It has a competitive mode where you can move up the ranks, an invento… Read full
Read full
I’ve been familiar with the series since 1.1, now it’s time for GO, what can I say, toxic physics, toxic community, schoolchildren on patrol.
