Arcade tank simulator, where you are invited to take control of armored vehicles from the 20th century during the World War II and Cold War eras. The game features over 800 combat vehicles from 12 different countries, divided into five large categories. As a separate project, "World of Tanks" has existed since October 2022, and its development is handled by the Russian company Lesta Games. From this moment on, it has no relation to the original World of Tanks and the developers from Wargaming.

After selecting an armored vehicle, you find yourself on one of the maps with random players. In the overwhelming majority of modes, physically destroying the enemy will lead to victory. However, in some of them, it is enough to capture and hold the enemy base or, conversely, prevent your headquarters from being captured.

Each shot is calculated according to the laws of physics. After hitting, you can either penetrate the armor of the enemy tank or deal no damage at all.

Each type of vehicle has its own tasks. For example, light tanks are needed for spotting the enemy, after which you can designate targets for heavier vehicles. Artillery takes time to aim, but it can hit the enemy from a great distance and can fire from relatively safe positions.

You can increase the effectiveness of your tanks by installing special modules. For this, you will need experience and silver, which can be obtained during battles. Money is awarded for successfully completing missions, and experience points are given not only for them but also for various tactical maneuvers, such as spotting the enemy, as well as for direct hits on enemy armored vehicles.

You can speed up leveling by 1.5 times by purchasing paid premium accounts. In the game, there is an opportunity not only to buy but also to win premium for several days while completing special missions. You can also obtain blueprints that guarantee discounts on certain modules.

Additional experience will come from completing daily missions and special challenges in the spirit of destroying a certain number of enemy towers. Leveling will be more effective if you fight as part of a separate platoon.

Changing modules allows you to not only improve the tank's characteristics but also finely tune it to your tactics. For example, for reconnaissance vehicles, it is important to increase the viewing range, while heavy armored vehicles should ideally speed up their reload time.

The game is free, but it has features that are unlocked for gold, the local premium currency. Among them:

If gold can be purchased for real money, then bonds are awarded only for successes on the battlefield. Typically, this refers to battles with 10th level vehicles, ranked battles, and special activities. This type of currency grants access to unique vehicles and special equipment, including those that cannot be obtained in other ways.

Although "World of Tanks" is an arcade simulator, you need to spend money on repairing tanks after hits. The more expensive the armored vehicle and the modules you have installed on it, the higher the repair cost will be. You will also need to separately purchase different types of ammunition that are consumed in battle. In unfortunate circumstances, a situation may arise where the battle only resulted in losses.

It primarily concerns the appearance of the vehicles, the placement of the crew, and various armor configurations. During the creation of models, developers consult with specialists. However, the physics of movement and shooting mechanics here are arcade-like, and the damage from each hit may differ from real indicators for the sake of balance.

Competitions for this game began in late 2022. By 2023, “World of Tanks” was recognized as the best esports discipline in the country. Around the same time, the Federation of Computer Games started awarding sports ranks for successful actions at the official level. Competitions are held regularly at various venues, and prize pools reach tens of millions of rubles.

Notable is the appearance of characters from Soviet films as commanders of tank crews. Among them are the legendary trio Trus, Balbes, and Byvaly from “Operation Y” and “The Prisoner of the Caucasus” by Leonid Gaidai, as well as the elusive Avengers from the films of Edmond Keosayan.

In 2024, the list of tankers was supplemented by characters from the Bubble comic series Red Fury — Nik Chaykin, Arthur Huxley, Joshua Donato, and Jan Van. In January of the same year, a music video by the band Aria titled “Hero of the Asphalt” was released featuring footage from the game, and a tank named “Phoenix” appeared in “World of Tanks,” named after the song.
