It was Microsoft's first independent attempt to enter the console market. Initially named DirectXbox. The operating system is Xbox OS – a heavily modified version of Windows 2000, with DirectX version 8.1. Direct competitors: SEGA Dreamcast, Sony PlayStation 2, and Nintendo GameCube. The best-selling game is Halo: Combat Evolved. The successor to the console is the Xbox 360.
