In Gothic 1 Remake, the combat system keeps the spirit of the original, but adds modern mechanics such as directional attacks, combos, stun effects, and a clear separation between damage types. If you do not want to become scavenger food in Chapter 1, you need to understand one thing: every enemy has a weapon type that works best against it. In this guide, we explain which weapons to use against different monsters and inhabitants of the Colony.
Damage Types and Weapon Training
Before choosing a weapon, it is important to consider not only the damage number, but also the attack type. In Gothic 1 Remake, swords, axes, maces, and hammers work differently against animals, humans, undead, golems, and armored monsters.
- Edge: swords. They have the best reach thanks to thrusts and high attack speed. They are excellent against soft-bodied creatures and humans.
- Cleave: axes. They deal huge area damage thanks to wide swings. They are ideal against groups of enemies.
- Blunt: maces and hammers belong to this category. They can stun enemies and break through armor. They are essential against stone and bone enemies.
In the early stages of the game, maces and hammers are usually the most effective weapons. Their uppercut reliably stuns most animals, letting you perform a full combo. Once you raise your weapon skill to Master level, you will be able to stun enemies and interrupt their attacks with any weapon, including swords.
Early Game: Wildlife and Small Vermin
In Chapter 1, speed, distance control, and the ability to quickly interrupt an animal's attack matter the most. Against scavengers, wolves, molerats, and rats, it is better to use weapons that do not lock the hero into long attack animations.
Which Weapons to Use
In the early stages, the main character is weak, and his attack animations are slow. We recommend using fast one-handed weapons with good reach. These include swords such as the Rusty Sword, Battered Sword, and Lurker Bite, or maces like the Spiked Club and Morning Star.
Combat Strategy
Scavengers and wolves attack in packs. Do not let them flank you. Land one or two hits after they miss, then block or dodge back. Against wolves, the timing of a low strike, such as a mace uppercut, works perfectly because it knocks them flat.
Midgame: Armored and Agile Enemies
In the midgame, a simple sword is often no longer enough. Lizards, lurkers, minecrawlers, and bloodflies have more protection, deadlier attacks, and fewer safe openings, so you need to choose weapons based on the specific enemy type.
Lizards and Minecrawlers
Lizards and minecrawlers have tough shells or scales. Regular swords will bounce off them and deal little damage. Use blunt weapons, such as the Orc Hammer or the Baals' maces in the Swamp Camp, as they ignore part of their protection. Axes also work well against minecrawlers in narrow mines because of their wide swings.
Lurkers
Lurkers attack with sudden lunges from the water. It is best to shoot them with a bow from a distance, or lure them onto land, meet them with a heavy axe strike, and then step back.
Bloodflies
Bloodflies are flying enemies that are hard to hit with a sword. Use a bow, such as the Hunting Bow, or wait until the bloodfly dives sharply and catch it with a counterattack.
Late Game and Undead: Choosing Special Weapons
In the later stages, enemy resistances to different damage types become much more important. Skeletons, zombies, golems, shadowbeasts, and demons may take almost no damage from the wrong weapon, so before these fights, it is worth preparing a hammer, axe, two-handed weapon, crossbow, or the right spell in advance.
Skeletons and Zombies
Against skeletons and zombies, only blunt melee weapons work reliably: maces and hammers, or fire magic. Skeletons have massive resistance to edge damage, so arrows and swords barely hurt them. A good war hammer smashes skeleton bones to pieces twice as fast.
Zombies are slow, but have a huge health pool. Burn them with spells or hit them with a heavy two-handed axe.
Stone, Ice, and Fire Golems
Golems are a classic Gothic test that has carried over into the remake. Regular swords and bows do not hurt them at all.
A Stone Golem is vulnerable only to blunt damage. Take out the heaviest hammer in your inventory, such as the Orc Hammer or a sledgehammer.
An Ice Golem can be damaged with fire magic, such as the Fireball spell.
A Fire Golem is weak to water magic or Fist of Wind.
Shadowbeasts and Demons
A Shadowbeast attacks quickly and deals enormous damage. You will not kill it with small one-handed weapons. You need the long reach of a two-handed weapon to keep it at a distance, as well as Master skill to interrupt its leaps. Because of that, we recommend using Master-level two-handed swords or axes, such as Innos' Rage, Death Scythe, or Lee's Axe, or a long-range crossbow.
Humans and Orcs
In the game, you will encounter mercenaries, guards, orc warriors, and shamans. Against humans and orcs, damage type is not the only thing that matters. You also need to read animations. These enemies block, parry, and counterattack more often, so weapons with good reach, high weapon skill, and a solid stamina reserve are especially useful here.
Fighting Humans
One-handed and two-handed swords work very well against humans. The best one-handed sword in the game is Scar's Sword with 85 damage, while the best two-handed sword is Innos' Rage with 110 damage. Humans are vulnerable to bleeding and fast lunges.
Fighting Orcs
Orcs are incredibly strong in melee combat and leave no room for mistakes. Shooting them from a distance works brilliantly. The War Crossbow is very good for encounters with orcs: it deals a record 120 damage, which lets you bring down an orc scout in just a couple of shots before he even reaches you.
If you do end up fighting orcs in melee, use high-damage two-handed axes, such as Gorn's Revenge. Block their heavy swings, read their stance, and strike strictly during their recovery windows.
Quick Enemy Weakness Cheat Sheet
Here are the same recommendations in a shorter form. This section will help you quickly understand which weapon to take against animals, minecrawlers, skeletons, golems, and orcs:
- Animals, such as scavengers and wolves: use one-handed swords and maces. Do not rely on heavy, slow weapons.
- Minecrawlers and lizards: use hammers and axes. Regular thin blades and knives are useless.
- Skeletons: maces and war hammers work best. Do not use swords, bows, or crossbows against them.
- Golems: prepare for each specific weakness. Use hammers against Stone Golems, water and wind magic against Fire Golems, and fire magic against Ice Golems.
- Orcs: use heavy crossbows and two-handed axes. Fast and light weapons are not recommended.

Gothic 1 Remake has a complex and layered combat system that requires adaptability, a wide selection of weapons, and tactical thinking. With this guide, fights against enemies should become easier. The main thing is to choose a weapon that matches the enemy's weaknesses and learn how to use it properly.
